Why no Hi-comp 340 Mopar Super Stockers ?
I see several 318 and 360 Super Stockers, but dont ever see any of the hi-comp 340 Super Stockers (with the Thermoquad , which would make it a 71 model ). I dont have a clue what its factored at ( is it different as a stick as opposed to an automatic ? ). I was just bored and thinking out loud. It just seems like a neat combo, that you could spin to the moon !
Any insight ? Thanks, J.C. |

A friend of mine is building a 340 for his SS '71 Duster. He's going to run SS/JA.

JC, taking a Duster as an example, the 72 340 auto is rated at 266hp, the 71 340 auto is rated at 283hp. Add 5hp to both if you use the Magnum R/T head. The 71 340 gets about 2.5 points compression and bigger heads over the 72 340 for 17hp more, sounds like a good trade to me.

I have one of those 318 SS motors. I have considered one of the Hi comp 340's but dismissed that with the introduction of the 360 DP motors. Should run circles around the other combos.

He's gonna be busy chasing the 360" DPs until they get the hp rating factored correctly. Maybe even after that. I would like to have one of those, but am too close to retirement to take on another project. Neat cars.

The High Comp. 340 would do fine in SS. When they do not have stock we run SS with our stocker....it run under theSS index with a stock motor without any mods even with a Pretty tired piece! Real SS motor would do fine.

Re: Why no Hi-comp 340 Mopar Super Stockers ?
Hi JC
Back in 2000, we started running our 2000 chrysler sebring in GT/CA with the 340 high compression combo. It wasn't as competitive as the 318 combo we use now, but it wasn't out of the ball park. We ran it for several years and went as fast as 9.84 at maple grove back in 2002. I believe it was rated 310 or 305 hp back then in the GT cars. I see that the GT 340 is rated at 290 now. (295 with the replacement heads). I won Englishtown in 04, and Columbus in 05 with this combo. It sure is a better hp combo now, but I'd rather do the dp 360 also. tom sheehan
