Hum..............We run exclusively red tops.
All our cars including both our Superstockers and
our Dragster run functional Alternators!

I do run a Yellow Top on our winch.

Please correct me if I am all WET = Not an electrical expert!

Red Tops in Stocker and bracket car. Bracket car was 6 years old and just replaced in December. Alternator on car also. I have been using solar battery charger when time allows. It is slow but works until eliminations then I go to generator.

I've used both and the yellow top with the OPTIMA charger seems to spin my engines at a higher rpm. I do have an alternator also. I will convert all my cars to yellow top from red.

The yellow top Optima is a deep cycle battery. The red top is a starting battery. You should be using the red top in a race car. Typically a deep cycle battery takes longer to charge and likes a low amp charge. They are best for RV and trolling motor type applications
