Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...
Well, folks... had some problems yesterday... floated valves just before the 1/8...shifted at 5700, and track wasnt hooking...i believe i was loosing atleast .04-.05 in 60ft...car was real soft on launch...i felt the spin, but it was a gradual dig, all the way through low gear... So , i may have tagged a valve, not major damage. Will leak it tomorrow, and go from there. Will have new cam ground and go to limited travel lifters, if i find out that this is the problem. Im hoping i sucked dirt into the carb, after i did all the new fuel system work...

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...
Congrats Brent!
Sorry test did not go as well as planned, but you have a legal motor in the car, and at the track! Ton of hard work (and money lol) starting to pay off. I will just keep watching and stay jealous! Maybe I will have the pile of parts put together one of these days for my 67 bird. Between weather and work, and son's Jr dragster, I have not even had my car out with the IHRA crate motor, let alone any work on the 400. Good luck! Ken Stock 412 67 Firebird Convertible G/CM |

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...
Brent,
Sorry , to hear about your problems ... Take the time to re-check everything you can while you are down !!!! Valve springs, rockers, timing, carb, etc . Use the carb off your other car, go with parts you know already work ??? Then change them back one at a time ? If you dinged a valve you would have some kind of miss, so keep looking ? Valve springs & Clearances are critical so keeping checking everything before you re-start ....Hang in there, you will be fine.... Good Luck

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...
Hey Dave...yea.. not what i was hoping for...but, doubt there is much damage... I will leak down, also, check carb, to make sure i didnt suck up something, after all the fuel system work... i did flush it, but you never know. Would be great if its just in the fuel system... but i'm doubting that ... will know more soon as i check compression...i have to get leak down guage from my buddy, but i do have a real nice compression guage, and it should point to a problem, if its big enough.... oil pressure is good, no leaks in the engine, and it fires right up, but you can tell it has lost a cyiinder or its running so lean, that its missing... will keep you posted!

Re: Update E-F/SA Bird Build...
Well...found the problem(s)... #4 CYL is ZERO #s compression...tagged valve(s) for sure... so, taking heads off soon...getting different cam/lifters, and getting heads repaired and trying it again...hehe You cant tell that the car has any issues by lookin at this pic...hehe.
Probably gonna take awhile to get it fixed...im not giving up yet
