You have to have it. If you don't its a pain in the *** and takes a couple hours to get back in. Don't believe the min wage idiot who takes your money to cross the bridge into Canada at Niagara Falls. They will tell you its OK, you don't need it and send you on over. Learned this the hard way.

Enhanced driver's licences are available in some states and are accepted as an alternative to a passport. New York state residents can get one.....a passport is still the best document to posses.

That's what we have for travel into Canada, an "enhanced" NYS driver's license. Show DMV an extra phone bill or two and pay them more money. Makes the world much safer. I love to be "enhanced" by all major acronyms...

You can also use a passport card that is the same size as your drivers license.
It is easier to carry than a regular passport. It is for ground travel also though. When flying, still need a passport.
