Default oil pumps

I've been told to run a standard volume oil pump in my stocker. How much does a high volume oil pump or a high pressure oil pump rob from engine horsepower?
Thanks,
Ron miller

Sometimes you just need to listen and not question why.

Better safe than sorry. More expensive engines ruined by to little than just enough or to much.

Good morning to all,
I guess it depends on the manufacture of engine, RPM, oil pan depth, and internal oil clearance's.

What Henry said. ^^^

If you have a well built SBC the stock small block oil pump is more than enough actually a little too much. The pump was designed for worst case scenario road driving by those who would do no maintenance and abuse the engine. The 5 quart fill requirement is actually a quart or more the engine really requires.

The power robbing point in the oil pump is the bypass not being large enough. This is explained in David Vizard's book on hot rodding a small block chevy. This is also mentioed in Grumpy Jenkins book on building his small block pro stock engine. Doing what is described will help if you don't want to go with the Schuman Pump and the hours a fabrication to get the full benefit.

Mods which help reduce HP loss in the oil system are not bolt on require hours hand fabrication most will not pay for or do themselves if they have the skills.
Having 50 lbs of oil pressure at idle and 80 lbs + down track may be self assuring but all you need 20-3- at idle and 40-50 down track to be good.

Be Well!
Work hard the results are fun!

Keep in mind the load on the cam changes when the bypass opens and closes plus the extra load on the gears caused by the restriction. There's HP loss there plus add the effect on valve and ignition timing varying. Consider the slop in the chain affecting ignition timing it all adds up to HP you're leaving on the table.
