Default queston on GM 8.1 dually for towing

Tell me good and bad on the GM 8.1 for towing in a dually. What is high miles - stay away from point? Lets assume good service, oil and filters, not abused, etc. Has Allison trans.

What issues are common with these motors - trucks? Looking at a 2004 Chevy.

Please don't just tell me to get a diesel... I am driving a 2003 duramax 2500 I got new, now. Is a great truck, love the motor and Allison trans. BUT - Need 4 doors and want dually for 32' trailer I am pulling now. Cant afford to buy new truck, and finding used diesel in decent shape for decent price is really hard in TX. (or about anywhere). Would prefer diesel, but I am not traveling long ways, just racing local while boys are in JR's... so mileage is not huge issue for next few years. 2500 handles the trailer fine, just need bigger truck as kids don't fit anymore.

thanks
Ken

Ken,
Those 8.1's are great. I have an old buddy that swears by them in his small motor homes and pickups. I also have a racing friend that lives 6 doors south of me and he loves his. If you or anyone needs one I have a buddy that totaled his PU in a roll over and has one with the Alison tranny and complete computer/harness. He wants $850 for it all. Only 165,000 miles on it and in great shape. Go for it and don't look back.

Adger, if you can hook me up with the guy who has that stuff for sale, I'd appreciate it a great deal.

Alan,
I snagged a "Find"
I just bought a 2002 Chevy 3500 Crew Cab with an 8.1 W/ Allison Auto.
Fairly well loaded truck with only 42,000 miles on it.
1 owner, no smoking. Doesn't even have a rattle or any annoying sounds.
It has lived all it's life here in Arkansas. ( most of it in doors)
I hooked it to my 45' Eagle L/Q and it pulls it very well.
Now I need to load the trailer and check it out.
