Default Mid Atlantic .90 Assoc. crowns 2016 Champs at Cecil County

Cecil County Dragway - Rising Sun, Md. (September 17th & 18th) - The Mid Atlantic .90 Association closed out its 2016 season at Cecil County Dragway by crowning two new champions and another adding his third straight to his long list of accomplishment. At day's end Chase Fahnestock (Super Comp), Don Knoblick (Super Gas) and Keith Mayers (Super Street) added championships to their resumes.

Going into the weekend, Super Comp points leader Chase Fahnestock controlled his own fate. With two victories and a runner-up in just five races, Fahnestock had almost a five round lead going into Saturday's action. As racing got underway, recent Atco winner and third in points Tom Slater was going to make things interesting for Fahnestock as he took his Undercover Dragster to the final round victory over Ash Senft on Saturday. Slater cut into Fahnestock's lead with a 8.906 to 8.912 victory and knew he needed to win on Sunday to claim the 2016 Championship. As the sun rose on Sunday and the action got underway both drivers proceeded to round #2. With Fahnestock looking on, Slater would match up against Danny "Mr. Happy" Bisbano who drove all night from the Carolina Nationals to attend Sunday's event. As the excitement built, Fahnestock became Bisbano's biggest fan as he would take down Slater with a 8.882 to 8.873 victory and clinching the Championship for Chase, his first with the series. With the event victory still on the line both Fahnestock and Bisbano would march all the way to the final round and match up against each other. Danny made the all night trip worth his while as he took his second victory of the year with a 8.899 to 8.889 decision over Fahnestock.

Turning our attention to Super Gas, which was a wide-open battle going into the weekend. All top-5 players lost early on Saturday and it opened the door for the drivers in the back half of the Top 10 to make a move. Mike Lang out of Coopersburg, Pa took full advantage of the early round losses by the top-5 with a final round victory over first time finalist Greg Barrett nomad wagon. In the finals both drivers laid down almost perfect runs with Lang taking his second victory of the season with a 9.901 to 9.908 decision over Barrett. With the victory it moved Lang into the Top 5 and into contention for a championship. Turning our attention to Sunday and the day a champion would be decided in the 9.90 category. Don Knoblick the mechanic out of Bath, Pa was sitting in second place in points but, wasn't counting points and was running his own race. After a bye run in the first round, Knoblick knew it was all on the line as he matched up against points leader George Smith. Knoblick took no prisoners with a perfect .000 light and a 9.903 to take the points lead but, he wasn't out of the clear just yet, as Race # 1 winner Don Miller was also going rounds. Going into the third round both drivers were in a virtual tie. Knoblick would take down the mustang of Frank Volpe and wait for Miller to run. Miller would light the red-light to Darlene Staub making Knoblick the 2016 Champion his first for the Silfies Automotive 72 Vega driver. Unfortunately, just like Fahnestock, Knoblick couldn't seal the deal in the finals as he would go red himself to Jay Cepelka out of West Virginia who was also making the trip home from ZMax Dragway just like Bisbano.

The final class competing was the 10.90 class of Super Street. Keith Mayers was looking for his third straight championship in the series but, wasn't out of the woods till 2nd round on Sunday. Mayers lost early on Saturday leaving the door open for 2nd place Kelli Barbato. A new winner graced the winner circle on Saturday as Joey Eyring was called upon by Rob Derr to come drive his 1983 Camaro. Joey would take the car all the way to the final round and match-up against Rick Mattioli's 1967 Chevy Camaro. Joey took the an emotional victory over Mattioli with a 10.913 to 10.925 decision. Eyring had been out of the driver's seat for almost 13 years before his victory on Saturday. As the final race of the season got underway both Barbato & Mayers could potentially meet in the semi-finals to decide the championship. Mario DiTeodoro had other plans though and took down Barbato in the second round to hand Mayers his third championship. Mayers carried that momentum with a victory over DiTeodoro in the semi's and into the finals where Rick Mattioli was waiting in the final again. Mattioli pushed the tree just a little too hard and went red with a -.002 to hand Mayers his third win of the season.
