Best Sounding Camshaft Stock or Super Stock
I know this might be a lame subject but I'm gonna post it up, better than hearing guys argue about old and new class cars.
I just left my garage after starting my old Torino after an oil change and man I tell you, I have never heard a better sounding Hydraulic Flat Tappett cam in all my years of following class racing. When I put my Torino back together I was trying to do it on a budget. My racing dad and friend for life John Douglas helped me build my new engine. When discussing cam choices he says to me I have two brand new cams that you can choose from but they are identical lol. John ran a 72 HO Mustang in H/S and had two brand new in the box Cam Dynamics Hydraulic Flat tappet cams. I was skeptical at firsrt because these cams were/are low lift, smaller than the old solid Crane I ran but at $50 I couldn't go wrong. Wow! Man this Cam Dynamics Hydraulic sounds so damn good! The average Joe thinks it is a roller and when I tell them it's a hydraulic flat tappet they can't believe it. My last one is the shaft I had in my old Super Stock Cleveland. I fought that thing for about a year trying to make it work but I came to the determination it wouldn't work with an automatic. I tell you what though, that Lunati Solid Roller sounded like popcorn. I still have it and I plan on using it some time in the near future. It may not work but I can guarantee you one thing, it might scre someone into thinking it's fast cause it sounds good lol! Have a good night friends! |

Some of the 305 SBC stockers have a bad azz sound.
The 5.7-6.1 Hemi has a really nasty sound, and it should considering the compression and cam it has.

Re: Best Sounding Camshaft Stock or Super Stock
Call me biased but I I love the sound of my '64 high compression 426 Max Wedge. .520" lift plus the usual ungodly duration. I can hear it from across the track.
A more surprising favorite is the one we stabbed into a '72 Maverick/Comet 302 2bbl. The lift is p-u-n-y and with the usual Stocker duration the lobes look almost square. It sounds radical. Thumbs down? The new V10 Challengers are impressive performers but they sound lousy. Chris Barnes Wagons of Steel Stock 6621 |

I dont know about best sounding (cant self proclaim) but I always have someone come up to me in the lanes and ask what size big block I have......in which I reply 300/290 horse 350. I have a comp cam for that combo and it sounds pretty crazy for a sbc, even those that know my combo are impressed with the sound (or so I have been told).

Chris
I am with you there the Max Wedge has it's own distinct sound. I am biased as well. Darcy Clarke 6254 AA/SA SS/JA |

350/255 with a Q-jet or any low compression 350.......Compression is about 9-1 but some of them sound more like 13-1
Stand behind a good one when it starts up....Q-jets make a distinct sound when they start sometimes....... A loud "Pow".....and it's running.... Last one that got my attention.....Jim Perrone......nice car, and pretty fast and the owner is entertaining......LOL P.S. dont't take that the wrong way Jim......!

Re: Best Sounding Camshaft Stock or Super Stock
I am kinda partial to my little 66 283. At the races around here a lot of people don't believe it is a 283 and don't believe it has a 399 hydraulic lift cam....
Gets more looks than my son's dragster did.Being a 4-door helps even more for the non-believers.......(i love it )

Re: Best Sounding Camshaft Stock or Super Stock
My opinion and obviously partial but the baddest sounding Stocker I've ever heard is my '70 AMX in D/S. And it sounded like a Jr. Fueler on my first trip to sea level in California as I went to the staging lanes first time. Too bad I blew it up on that pass...
