Re: What are the best casting double hump heads?
461X were the heads everyone looked for years ago..
Intake runners were bigger than most all other heads. Casting quality was not very good on some of those old heads. Head bolt bosses cracked and the material the heads were cast from seemed soft and not as durable as later heads....

the 041 casting is a good choice, in addition, it has bolt holes on each end that can be helpful with mounting a bracket or such.

Re: What are the best casting double hump heads?
The best flowing "untouched" heads out of the 39 sets I have tested were particular 462 and 291 castings. I did not flow 461 heads because they were not legal on my combination. I flowed 462, 291, 292, 186, 041 and 492 castings. 186 and 041 always showed good numbers. You had to be picky about the 462 and 291 castings.
For what it's worth. I'm sure there are others with more data and experience.

The late Dave Layer like the 291 casting. Hettler likes the 041 casting. But this is when doing SS modifications.

Re: What are the best casting double hump heads?
I assume you are running a '68 327/275 or a 350/295. I have several cores around, and it seems that most cores out there aren't very original, that is, they have had too many valve jobs, guide replacements, and re-surfacing done on various places that would carry the original design a bit far from the original configuration. In short, low mileage virgin cores with no rebuilding or modifications are a scarce commodity. This is by no means restricted just to Chevrolets, either. Now, how do we adequately reconcile all this to some degree of legality and consistency with legality. We all know that mass produced parts do vary, and that is the reason one person's 291 head will outflow another's 041 head, this being within the same blueprint spec.Flowing 39 sets of heads would give a head guy a pretty good idea of what is out there, and a good feeling for whatever variations you could expect.
