Default GM 8.5 mini spool

Anybody run a mini spool in a 8.5 GM rear end? Will they survive in a low horsepower stocker?

They are recommended for dirt track cars only. I don't know why.

J,
A posi-traction will survive in a low hp automatic Stocker. I don't see why a mini spool wouldn't.

I believe a mini spool is not legal in NHRA. You are also required to have aftermarket axles when running a spool.

When I bought my H or J/SA 1980 Camaro it had a mini spool in it and had hundreds of passes on it without failure.

It may last, but it is more prone to failure because with a mini-spool, all the load from the ring gear to the axles is transmitted only through the pin, to the bore in the cast case. With a posi unit, most of this load is transmitted through the clutches, into the inside of the case.

I ran a 8.5 ten bolt mini spool in a 87 firebird 3200 lbs bracket car. the car ran 11.17 122mph 1/4 mile 7.08 99mph 1/8 mile with a trans brake. We had over 100 passes at those time with no problems. I would not say that they are bullet proof but if you foot brake with low hp it should last a long time.
