Default Determining Spring Rate

How do you determine what spring rate would be the correct application for your race car? We are looking at replacing our front springs due to a fair amount of corrosion in the area of the spring where it sits in the lower control arm pocket. I noticed in the Jeg's catalog that Moroso has a specific spring rate for an application based upon whether the car is a big or small block along with the the total front end weight. Is this an acceptable way of determining which rate spring you need or are there other factors involved?
