Default New racer 3800 question

I want to know if a gen 3 motor or just crank rods and pistons are legal in my 96 Camaro.

You can run that 231 V6 in SS/P or SS/PA pistons and rods can't be lighter than factory. The specs are on this site. There are 2 piston P/N,s listed
You can run the 231 in stock M/N or O

Or you can run LT1 350 in stock B/C or D

In SS you can run a lighter piston and pin. Must use approved rod.

Although the accepted products list has individual weights for each component, during a teardown they look at the total assembly weight.

From what I see:
The 1996 Camaro V6 is a Series II engine (1996-2002 Camaro L36), (shorter deck of the Series I)
The upper intake manifold was prone to crack around the EGT passage. Revised intake upper and lower gasket corrected the problem.
Series III engine became available in 2001 on the Bonneville model, then in 2004 on the Grand Prix GTP model. Upper and lower intake was made in aluminium and had an Electric Throttle Control. (Not sure that this ETC is legal for your set-up).
A look in the classracerinfo.com website tell me: aluminium intake is accepted for your 96 Camaro.
Block seems to be the same as the Series II.
Now, regarding the Series III heads, Intake ports are mildly improved. Intake valve went from 1,80 in. to 1,835 in. and exhaust valve from 1,52 in ( not sure) to 1,525 in. All of those numbers tell me that they are out of specs (not legal) for the 96 model.
To be sure, I suggest taking a closer look at the casting number of your Series III. A list of accepted casting number is also available on this website.
At the end, be sure to make more studies on Mr. Southerland website (classracerinfo) and on NHRAracer.com website, in the Engine Blueprint Specifications section and in the Accepted Products section and in the end, don’t hesitate to talk to your Division tech director.
Keep on,

Also, look at the 2013 January edition of the Drag Racing Action magazine page 36 and up, there is a great article by Wayne Scraba on Harry Doolittle 2002 Pontiac Firebird V6 Stock Eliminator "Buick"(corporate engine).
This article will definitely titillate your research.
