Default Factory Super Cars

Both NHRA and NMCA have created heads-up racing around the current crop of Factory Drag Super Cars. Is there enough excitement for this to morph into the next Pro Stock?

NMCA already has a dedicated championship points class, should NHRA follow suit? I envision a semi-pro class with a 8-race series (4 races in the east/4 in the west), a racer can earn points at up to 4 events, with the top 6-8 points earners making the shootout for the championship at the NHRA Finals in Pomona. Run it Chicago-style, all cars run three times, the fastest two then run a 2 out of 3 match race on Sunday for the championship.

Here's a story I did to illustrate the cars and the classes:

Yes, it was a good article. I am ambivalent about the new crop of factory stockers. I'm happy to say that I am undefeated against them in my 52 year old station wagon but I'm old enough myself to know that is more luck than anything else. I can't even imagine owning/driving one--they are so technologically advanced and expensive. Maybe it's one reason that crusty old bracket racers like us sometimes have a hope against them--they are so expensive that to have the money to own one you have to work too hard to get enough quality seat time to drive one well. Hell, I'm jealous! I admit it! All that said, I have dreamed of them becoming the next Pro Stock, even if I just get to watch. Knowing the NHRA as I do, I'm not holding my breath...

Great article Evan. The NHRA should, at the very minimum, increase the number of Factory Showdown races to 8; and expand the venues to tracks west of the Mississippi river. As it stands now, the westernmost Showdown race is at Indy; to provide the maximum exposure for the category, it should be showcased nationwide.
