Option B is a 77 Pontiac Catalina 4dr. Man it's ugly.
Either way, 305 2bbl is what I'm aiming for.

What do you think?

I think you ought to keep looking for a Camaro.

Understandable, but for two things:
1. Its a dirt track town, and this part of the state, a gutted Camaro or Nova shell still brings $500. I gave $300 for this, plus a complete 305 and a Metric 200.
2. I don't like Camaros.

Mark, I think at this point in time it would be nice to see Joe just get a car running and to a racetrack. Joe can always make it a Camaro (or Firebird) at a later date.
Just an FYI, I don't know this to be the Gospel truth but have been told by a couple of knowledgeable Racers over the years that the body is worth about a tenth.

Hmmm..I see your point.
Actually, I misspoke .
What he needs is a '78 Nova Custom 2 dr HT ..it is now at 174 hp!
This Impala doesn't even make U/SA ..The Nova now does.
Let's see. 6 less hp = 120 lbs in U.
T/SA - 14.40, U/SA - 14.85 ...That's 4.5 tenths for another 174 lbs.
Minus 120 lbs. for using the Nova body.
That's cheap ET , just for using the right car. For a guy that seems to be budget-challenged, this sounds like a better way to go.
$200 more for a body is cheap ,for all that ET.
Plus the Nova has the stick shift option.

Re: Some "Dime Rockets" for the 4TH!

Thought I might mention here.
I don't have a big problem with the Impala body style, per se.
All it needs is an air bag in the right rear, and it oughta hook anywhere.

Bob Michael goes plenty fast with his 77 Catalina in K/SA. Those cars are amazingly light for a full frame deal.

You're right about the weight and HP but in the 21ST Century NHRA, that's just a matter of going slow, writing letters and puckering up.

Fair enough.

Should be noted here. One has to actually go to Divisionals, at least, to get a reduction. .
Probably have to go through 2 rating periods to get all 6 hp off.
So this deal would have to live with the 120 lbs. for a while.

You can't just call 1-800-CRY- NHRA anymore ;-)

Re: Some "Dime Rockets" for the 4TH!

I do have the correct 77 grille for this car. It was complete, titled, and solid, and a great home for a 305. I'd pay 500 for a stripped Nova or Camaro around here, so I'd also have to find interior and trim most likely, now that lighter roller costs me even more. I just want to get down the track, and eventually under the index. To do it in something nobody else runs is extra incentive for me.

It's odd to me that the 78 is 300lbs lighter in shipping weight than the 77 or 79, maybe an error?

Re: Some "Dime Rockets" for the 4TH!

Its a Caprice, instead of the Impala, if that helps.

A used car place in town has a 74? (has the extended bumpers) Maverick for sale, anyone interested I can give you his number. I Also have some pics. Since I don't know much about the Fords I'm guessing this could be a dime rocket with the 6 or 302?

Comes with a 8.8 and a posi.
Almost all Mustang parts will fit.
If I had the extra $4-5 grand and time we would build one in a second.
We probably have enough spare parts to get one under the index without touching the motor.

It's a snowy day in the hills of Pennsylvania so I thought that I would refresh some memories and bring this favorite of Alex's back to the top. It still really needs to be built!

Dang, one of these 85s got crushed here about a month ago. I used parts off of it to fix and flip an 89 I got cheap...

Yes, it's a Fox body.

WOW! Could it be that someone in the "Ivory Tower" is reading Classracer?!?
Noooo...... it can't be. A real Racer must have brought it to someones attention.
Especially a super popular combo like that!
Or maybe it was just on the "to do" list for 40 years.

Yeah, but in typical fashion, it was only half corrected. They fixed the Caprice and missed the Impala 2dr and 4dr.

Maybe we could start with the V/SA combo that last set the record. Should be competitive with the 302 Fords both cost and performance wise.

I just figured that you, Mark, or Dwight had a few ideas saved for a rainy day. ;) If nothing else, I thought this thread would make for good reading/inspiration for those who haven't seen it yet.

Most of the combos in this thread are still untouched. The '82 Mustang/Capri is still at 157hp (less than some of the other 302 2-bbls that have been hit). The '79 Mustang/Capri is still at 143hp. If you're a GM fan, all of those 305 2bbls are still at 180hp, and I've seen a few run well. There are dozens of different ways you could build one - I think they would all be fun!

My two favorites are still the '85 Lincoln and the '96-'98 Mustang V6 (I know Will Lamprecht is working on one!).

I talked to Lee Tuttle in the staging lanes at the Baby Gators. I was very impressed with his 305 2bbl Camaro. A second under in R/SA!

The pluses for this combination and the potential makes it a must look at in my opinion.

The engine is basically the same as the one Billy Lynn and Dean Oliver race in their Malibus in K & L. The only difference is the carb and a smaller intake valve (which may be a plus with the smaller carb!). Those Malibus run 11.80s consistently at 3250 lbs, so we can get a guage on the potential of the U combination from that. If you allow that the switch to a 2-bbl will chop a full second off and the added weight for U (3770 lbs. minimum) will slow by another .6 or so, the U combination should run mid 13s in a class with a 15.15 index. I see lots of potential there to be a competitor.

Then, consider that the 200 Metric or 200R4 is available and the car will be equipped with a GM 8.5" ten bolt. The 200 is a transmission of choice in lots of classes and the 8.5 is plenty strong enough with stock parts for this combo. The body has leaf springs so traction is easy and the plethora of available bolt-ons makes used parts easy to find. There have been several racers over the years chase combinations using the Rochester 2-bbl, so even the carb is not exactly an unknown.

I see lots of affordable potential in these combinations. I think the big problem for most people would be resisting the temptation to go overboard with the cosmetics and tricks that are available and applicable for the engine and car.

Bob, first page of this thread and 8 1/2 years ago.
I'm just glad to see a few 305s, 302s and 318s being built and run and running well!

Rick , It is covered here, although back a ways.
I'd call it a primitive design ,compared to the 134 S 10 .. ;-)

Re: Some "Dime Rockets" for the 4TH!

Back in 2014, I decided to build one of the suggested dime rocket combinations posted on this thread. Unable to decide which combo to go with I eventually went with a Gen 2 Camaro I purchased from a soldier from Fort Bragg, NC. After several PMs with Billy and one with Dwight I went with the ‘81 Camaro 267-2V combination for U/SA. Post 37, pg. 4. With Billy’s advice, and with help from 2 of my sons, Tim and Matt, Doug Hobgood, Jeff Flores, Doug Smith, Bill Bogues, and my good friend Mike Moller, this car has run a best so far of 14:19 @ 92.74 mph. .65 under the U index. Working with the Rochester dual jet carb has been a challenge however Doug Smith built one for me that works just fine. This past year added a Tim Sloan Metric 200 and an Ultimate Converter from Lenny Crouteau which really woke this combo up. She may be slow, but having a blast running this car and she has more in her. Gonna keep thrashing on it and special thanks to all of the above friends who made this all possible with me.

Ya know, my 72 Nova 307 is at 165 HP. I know that it will never be a "killer" combo and it probably could never qualify at Indy but if someone were to have a 70-72 body just lying around, it doesn't get any easier (or cheaper) than this. I've gone 13.60s in T with a 'Glide and worn-out junk. 72 Camaro makes U at 168 HP. AND sticks for Dwight!

That ‘72 Camaro would make one cool stocker especially with a stick ! Trouble is I haven't seen a decent early gen2 Camaro body around for the past 20 years or so. Only show cars that are far out of reach. As I have said before we need more lower class “junior” stockers !
