Re: Original hemi dart information
Here is a photo my friend Tom Olsen took at Englishtown in the summer of 1969 (Dick Oldfield car):

Re: Original hemi dart information
As for my own, making some progress. Tim Banning is getting started on the new Hemi, and I am still figuring out exactly what else I want to do. I did swap out the Super Tricks and dry-rotted Firestones for some new Cragars and Mickey Thompsons:

liteweight I'm liking your playroom Clint. That leaky old LO23 is going to be leaving oil trails all over that nice floor...lol Had Cragars on mine for a few years. Put spinners on them. This is a pic from 2006? I'm thinking when I still had the pump gas friendly Elfhunt in it. http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...uzin2008-1.jpg |

Thank you! Don't worry, the floor is used to leaks. At least they are easy to wipe up. Practically everything I own leaks one fluid or another. Except the modern ones. Your car looks fantastic, btw. |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Quick question for you guys that actually run your cars- do you have a front engine plate, or just motor mounts alone? Tim Banning suggested I install one.
Also, does anybody really have any idea how many of the original 80 LO23s are remaining? |
Re: Original hemi dart information
If your going to run an external oil pump getting the lines to fit on a uncut mount or K member is almost impossible . Add in #1 header tube and steering box.
Look at the pic of the mount previous of my motor. I have an uncut K member and dual milodon pump. The mount is custom fabbed from tubing that replaces the OEM mount. I can provide better pics if you need. Whats on it now? liteweight |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Second part of your question is kinda a loaded question. There are a few out there that may of not started with A LO23 designation but have one now.
Mark Janaky or Dell Jones are the most knowledgable on these things . I used to think theres about 50% but I believe I am low. liteweight |

Here is the current setup. I can't get over how much more room there is in this little Dart engine bay compared to the passenger side shock tower area in my '67 GTX (see last pic). Those Hurst hammers did the trick pretty well, I guess. But yeah, I see what you are saying...pretty darn tight by the drivers side engine mount. http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbgxijp9s.jpg http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps9nc1iuju.jpg http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/a...pspaj06zur.jpg http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbehlrtqj.jpg http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/a...pso1i25o5p.jpg http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/a...pso3oz5xch.jpg |

Re: Original hemi dart information
Southland Gator Raider picture ^^^^ up there, lifted from Dave McClelland"s photo bucket page!
This was as most are just a stroke of luck to find. Question now is.......where did it go? Is it possibly the Slaughter/Flippo Dart from a few posts back? If not, where did that one come from and where did it go? http://www.lakelandraceway.com/image...po_ss_dart.jpg |

Re: Original hemi dart information
That picture above maybe from this race? I believe the orange/white Camaro was Jim Hayter.

Re: Original hemi dart information
I have no idea where I found this and one more picture but I do remember it saying this one (which looks a LOT like the Gator Raider, red highlights added to the previous paint maybe) was rumored to be the Slaughter LO23.

Where did it come from and where did it go? He had a BO29 as well. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...r_SS_1972_.jpg |
Re: Original hemi dart information
No takers on my front engine plate question/ engine mount photos, huh? I was hoping for maybe some photos of how you guys have your engines mounted, particularly if you have a front engine plate, as my engine builder recommended.
Here's another question maybe somebody can help with: Dick Smith must have poured some molten lead into the rearmost portion of the trunk lid, because its like lifting 80 pounds to open the trunk. I can see where this was a sneaky way to add some hidden rear ballast, but I have to imagine that with my new engine (300+ more horsepower and ~150 lbs less weight in front), I will not want that extra weight back there. I assume I will have a hard time just keeping the front end down on launch without that weight back there. To remove it, I could either replace the whole trunk lid with another '68 Dart trunk lid, or try to heat up the lead somehow and hope it will "pour" out?? Thoughts, opinions? Thank you ! |
Re: Original hemi dart information
I would keep the "leaded" deck lid just for it's "cool factor" and get a replacement deck lid for the car if it really proved to be a problem.
But.... I am just a fan. |

Thanks for keeping this alive, Charlie! I still have no new pictures to try and find out just what the paint looked like in the day, hopefully it will happen soon! I have to contact Bob Riggle soon, he said he would build my Hemi for me, and I am driving out to Muscle Cars at the Strip in April, so hopefully I will be bringing it with me for him to build! I HAS to be running for the Carlisle reunion in 2108... |

Below are a bunch of pics of how I have mine mounted. I understand Tim's desire of putting a motor plate into it, but if it never has had one before, why install one now. It was good till now right??? As far as the lead in the trunk. Hey, that's pretty cool. Get a flashlight and mirror and have a look in there. These truck lids are very heavy with no added weight to them if the torsion bars have been removed to assist in the lift. liteweight http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...HPIM0979-1.jpg http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...HPIM0981-1.jpg http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...HPIM0984-1.jpg http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...HPIM0986-1.jpg |
Re: Original hemi dart information

Re: Original hemi dart information
Joe Ralph Thompson Dart was sold to the Teuton family. You say it went from them to Jim Hale?

Re: Original hemi dart information
Looking at the front wheels guessing this was just ahead of the red/white/blue paint work in the 76 Indy picture above. While I'm stealing pictures from Teuton family facebook (at least I'm honest about where they come from :) ) Might as well put this one up. Big Joe Dart in primer. If you want a photo time warp to southern Louisiana Super Stock racing past and present, check out their facebook pictures sometime.

That would explain the tow rig rust.
You are probably correct. There was no caption on the post for that pic. Could very well have been it's "going away" picture. |
