Hows about another Mr. Norms Hemi Dart that is not on the list. Richard Shipley from Baltimore, Maryland that went to Joe DeSantis? It was one of the 13 that went to Norms and he bought it new in June of 1968. Raced by Joe as the Poison Dart.

Sorry for the smallish pics, but here is another one.

Last one for now. Good top pic and bottom one has a Camaro in front with the Dart on a hauler in the background. Joe told me the car was painted red with black spiderwebs and a pygmy on the fender with a dart gun blowing a poison dart.....

Re: Original hemi dart information

|
Re: Original hemi dart information

Re: Original hemi dart information
A correction on my post above of how many Darts Ron Mancini owned. He had 2 not 3 . I forgot the 3rd car I was thinking of was Bruce Hawk's. Lou only owned 1.

Re: Original hemi dart information
Mike, I think alot of brain cells have gone away over the years. Ron sold the red and black car and built the body biw car it was yellow and orange. He then built another and also painted it yellow and orange. He sold the first one to Bruce Hawk and he had the other. I went to spring nats with him when both cars were there. Ron ran his in a/mp on that weekend. Mike Dawson also had his ss/aa cuda there that was painted yellow and orange. Jay Montrose had his yellow and orange cuda there running in c/sm. So there was 4 yellow and orange cars there that race. The A/MP car is the one that Ron crashed at Indy latter that year. Jake
Mike now that I think of it I don't think Ron ever drove the car that Bruce got.?????????????? |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Hi Jake, we used to do some stuff with Bruce when he ran the Max wedge car.I had to double check. It was accurate.I got the low down on one of the other Dart's bought in the Detroit this week.Still alive and well.Just hiding.

Re: Original hemi dart information
Probably won't help much but I remember one of those darts showing up at Old Dominion Dragstrip in Manassass, Va. It was new and I think grey primer and automatic. It belonged to a car painter at a bodyshop in Fairfax , Va. He later painted it, don't know the color and named it the Cookie Duster. Don't ever remember seeing it again after that first day but did hear it was more than he wanted to handle and sold it shortly after. Memory ain't what it used to be.

Re: Original hemi dart information

Re: Original hemi dart information
Mike, I've been straining my old pea brain for days but just won't come to me. I'll keep at it and ask some of the guys that were around then.------Danny

Re: Original hemi dart information
M68,
Nice photos of Charlie's SS/BA Dart (2nd car), which he purchased from Tom Crutchfield out of Kokomo, Indiana in May 1969. Notice in the staging lane photo. The white front fender of the Centolanza Brothers 1967 R/O Plymouth Hemi Belvedere (sneaking into the picture), just behind Charlie's Dart. Both cars were Dover Drag Strip regulars 1968 thru 1971. Re: Original hemi dart information
What are the current SS/AH hemi darts using for front torsion bars? Looking at cloning a 67-69 Dart body and ride height of one of these current Super Stockers like Gary Wolkwitz or Jim Daniels. It will be a street/strip car with a 340 that is being given to me.
Thanks Manny |
Re: Original hemi dart information
What they're using and what you need with the lightweight motor you're going to run . with a hemi/big block if you use the mopar performance race t bars your car will settle down low into the weeds eventually no matter how tight you twist them-they're that light. Stock the 68SS cars used the heavy 383 bars so you could set the height where you want it and it stays there. I wouldn't worry too much about them, build your car and see how the bars you already have work and go from there.

Flintstone,
I have several photo's of Chick Brignolo's Dart from 1968/1969. When it was lettered 'Play Thing". Pretty car. Green with those nice American Racing Wheels. Paul |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Art,
It looks possible. HARRAH'S CASINO Las Vegas, Nevada Purchased a new 1968 Hemi Barracuda SS/BA in May 1968 (2nd production run) Wonder what happened to it. I wonder if it was around long enough to compete at the Stardust National Open in Las Vegas in February 1969. Paul |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Mike,
Judy Lilly was at the 1969 NHRA Winternationals in Pomona. Her car was painted in a Sox & Martin scheme, and lettered with Denver Plymouth Dealers on the door. ran SS/BA. It was re-painted later in the year, with Judy Lilly on the door and Denver Plymouth Dealers high on the rear quarter panels. In 1969 she posted at best of 10.52 @ 132.80. As per the information, she got the car in August 68', spent 5 months putting it together at a cost of $8000. She was a Hot Rod Magazine feature article for April 1970. pc |

Sox & Martin selling 'race-ready' 1968 SS/B Barracuda's in 1969
for $10,000. Turn key, and guarantee 10.50's @ 130 MPH. Nobody could build them for less money. How many went through their shop????? pc |
Re: Original hemi dart information
good question Paul and one that i wonder about too. how many cars did S&M prepare and how many were built from legit cars and how many were "built" from regular Barracuda's?

The Jerry's automotive car was driven br David Heath out of Owensboro ky.. It was owned by Dr. William Pearson a silent partner. David died of cancer in the early 70's. David was one of the original owners of the 65 awb Ky. Colonel dodge.

Re: Original hemi dart information
Hemi Moose;
The Judy Lilly car (1970 photo, SS/AA). That was by far the best paint job on any of her cars. Very clean paint scheme. And 10.40's to boot. Only $8000 invested,,,,,,,,,,,YIKES. On the Speedwin Automotive SS/BA Dart. Joe Jill wasn't always behind the wheel. Joe also built the Hemi for Charlie Castaldo's 1st Dart. The 4-speed car. Purple Barracuda. SS/B is lettered on the 'C' pillar. Check out the rear wheel wells,,,,,molded edges. David Heath.........Could be the Kentucky Colonel car. Primarily 'Match-raced' in the mid-south. pc |

"This car has a great history. It was actually found in a junkyard. Crazy huh!"
More like totally clueless and ignorant "auto murderer" as someone I once knew used to describe it. Fortunately someone with intelligence was able to rescue this rare gem. http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/7718/gsnow60.jpg http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/7136/gsnow40.jpg http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/4517/gsnow46.jpg http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/711/gsnow51.jpg M68 |
