Has nobody run a 73 cleveland? How come this has never been protested or the issue been raised?

1973 4-bbl heads had the smaller valves. I just put a set on a friends '73 Mustang convertible and they were the small valve heads. I also have another set in the garage. So NO! All 4-bbl heads DO NOT contain the larger valves. All CLOSED CHAMBERED 4-bbl. heads contain the larger valves. The D3ZE-AA heads came in both large and small valve configurations and that casting # is the legal replacement head for all open chambered 4-bbl heads. Rarely, the small valve versions show up on e-bay. In fact, there is a set of '73's on e-bay right now The ad says they have the 2.19 Intakes, but it's obvious they still have the 1.66 exhaust when they are compared to the '71 large valve heads also on e-bay. The space between the valves is significantly larger on the '73 heads.

I guess I'll go to bed tonight a little less stupid! LOL! I've never seen or even HEARD of small valves in a 4bbl head. I had dozens of pairs stacked like cord wood years ago. Any time somebody had "an old cleveland" laying around I'd scoop it up because of the volume of cranks I was going through. (before I learned about the oil line in the valley trick). I grabbed 2bbl and 4bbl engines. Never saw or even heard of small valved 4bbl motor.

Was canada different???

Was I in a sheltered community??

very strange/suprising....I suppose now somebody will say the 351W came with a 4bbl in certain years too! (Just kidding)

Yes, 1969. Check the NHRA Blueprint sheets.

That trick would be illegal in NHRA Stock...

I'm sure Vern is lovin' you guys right now! But then again, maybe he does run the small valves?

Also, SSDiv6 is correct. 1969 351W with 4bbl factory rated at 290 HP. I had one in a '69 MACH 1 with a 4-speed in high school. Always beat the Clevland racers and always had to prove it was a Windsor! Always thought it wouldn't be as bad as people say in Stock.

The NHRA Blueprint sheets show a 351C @300 HP for 1970; does not show a 351W-4-bbl for 1970.

Thats right, 1969 was the only year for a factory 351W with a 4 barrel in a car. In 1970 all the 351 4 barrel engines were C`s, although both the W & C were available as 2 barrel engines. There were plenty of factory iron 4 barrel intakes made later than that for marine 351W engines, and Ford did make a 351 HO 4 barrel engine in the mid 80`s, but only in trucks. As for the small valve 4v Cleveland engines, I used to own a 73 351CJ engine, and I was certain that it had the open chamber, large valve heads, were ALL 73 heads supposed to be small valve?

Not that it adds alot to the thread but I had an F-350 in 1985, it had a 351 W w/ a Holley 4 barrel.

The 351W HO with 4 barrel was avalable in the police cars also. the 73 4 barrel 351C open chamber head had a smaller intake valve than the 72 head that was prone to cracking between the intake and exhaust valve.
