RPO Z/27 is Supersport option. All big block early Camaros are Z/27s.

Back in the late 60's all the solid lifter engines (except in Corvette) was not listed in hardly any of the GM order info. You had to know the dealer rep and get a special order form called Central Office Production Order COPO. Some dealers would not even order from this or couldn't I am not sure which. You had to dealer shop for someone who would get you what you wanted.
I bought mine from Ted Simmions Chevrolet in McClean TX. Ted would get you whatever you wanted. It was a small town dealership on I-40, which is now long closed. Its been 40 years ago but I did help fill out the order on my purchase for a 69 and then later for a 70 model both with the 396 375 HP option engine and it was a write in code not on the order form. The 69 was with a automatic and the 70 model was with a 4 speed. If we could have come up with the right code I guess we could have ordered the 427 but we did not have the coding for that. Ted had the coding for the listing Special High Performance 396 - 375 HP. I actually owned both of these. Wish I still had them. |

It took me 3 different dealers in the AkronOhio area to finally find one that would order me a 68 Chevelle with a 396-375 with the aluminum head option. First 2 dealers didn't even have the iron headed option 375 in their order books. Most dealers didn't want to fool around with any hi-perf. options. Could have bought a 68 vette from Motion-Baldwin loaded 427-L88 m22 4:88 for 6800.00. The Chevelle was 3010.00. My friend bought the exact same options m22,4:88 375 in a Camaro for 110. more because of the front disc brake mandantory option. We bought L-88 short blocks for 1150.00 Now you can't buy a hemi block for under 2500. and that is being produced in China.

I was thinking about this today trying to remember what I paid for each.
I believe the 69 was about $2900. I know it was less than $3000 for a brand new car!!! Hard to believe. I do remember it did not get built before the strike in late 68 when it was ordered. I do remember the date I picked it up. It was January 23, 1969 when I drove it away. I was in my cousins wedding that day also and he is still married to the same gal. It must have been a good day. The 1970 model cost about $3300 if I remember correctly. I thought the price increase in one year was outrageous but I still ordered and got it in about a month after it was ordered. Both of those cars were fun and I have a lot of memories with them. Just wish I still owned them but back then they were just not that special except for the solid lifter engines. There were lots of muscle cars around and lots of street racing going on. The Good Ole Days |
