Thanks for remembering...car ran Sanford, Fayettville, Roxboro, Broadslab, Kinston,Jacksonville,Farmington, Piedmont.yes the 68 started as an original E Stock Z28 that ran on a difficult (at that time the Old Reliable Camaro Stahl/Moroso/Strickler )12.12 et record...later ran as Modified Production...finally won in 1976 at Bowling Green NHRA district meet by Bobby Warren when he borrowed the Camaro and converted back to run stock eliminator....the Camaro was sold at that Bowling Green event....I believe it had the monoker "Super Rooster" still on it when sold.....If anyone knows anymore about the "whereabouts"...of this Camaro I would love to know....I still have the original 4bbl cold air filter assy package .disc brakes which were replaced for drum brakes in order for car to weigh less, and air pump for the emmission required at that time for it as delived by the dealer then Bill Garainger Chevrolet of Apex, NC.

Bobby, while attending David Lipscomb College in Nashville, I remember racing at a drag strip in Dixon?(spelling) Tenn west of Nashville (I think) that had about 100 feet of rough concrete before it coverted to dirt for the remainder of the quarter mile.....mud and snow tires were the choice of the day.....do you remember the track???Also had a great time with John Livingston at Union Hill Nashville.....but that was 1960-1964....so my memory about Dixon may be faulty....

I guess it depends on one's perspective, but no picture with a Camaro in it qualifies as "old," in my book...

But then, I had 12 years of going to the drags under my belt when the Camaros came out...

To me, an "old" drag strip photo has to include a flag starter, and steel wheels... LOL!

Bobby....my brain just had a senior moment.....I saw your address as Tennessee but on second look I see it is Texas......I do not know how you would have any idea about my adventures in Tennessee....but anyway it was good chatting with you...

Is the Camaro pictured the Law and Order race car to which you refer? We have been trying to identify the car at the Sanford track . Are you the first one to recognize it correctly?

Everyone it is the old Sanford Dragstrip. Ebern you were the first to respond.

Tracy you guys and gals (Doc's daughter) sure did wear down that red clay pit area.

Arnold we were trying to figure out the name of the car and who drove it. Was the car "Law and Order"?

Bob Rice, I had forgotten about Holly Ridge? At the East Coast Reunion I am going to mention that track to Bret Kepner. He has started a registry for all of the drag strips. As I understand from our last conversation North Carolina had a high ranking for the number of dragstrips in our state.

Now to HEMIPARTS, ladies and gentlemen, this young man is kind of close and has to listen to all of the old stories and looked at the photos. He has had the opportunity to meet and talk with many of the legends in the sport of drag racing. Last year, on the Thursday night before the reunion, he had an opportunity to experience the history of our sport first hand as the driver of one of the most famous mopars to run down the track. This car had not seen the track in years. This was a match race (remember those) against a Sox and Martin car. When he climbed out of the car,after the first round, his comment was, "I don't know how you guys lived as long as you have, driving these cars."

The driver, last year at Roxboro Dragway, was my son Chris (Hemiparts). The car was orginally driven be Don Carlton and last owned and driven by Mike Fons. The night that car went down the track was the first time, best guess, in 20 years. Chris, after driving the car that night, has had the opportunity to talk with Pappas and many of the original team members of Don Carlton racing.

The car in the picture was assembled by the late Tom Stenzel and myself in the summer of 1969. We set the A/S record at Gainesville on September 13, 1969 while I was still in the Navy, staioned at Cecil Field.

I brought the car home( Chapel Hill) with me in late 69 and raced it at Fayetteville, Sanford, Dunn Benson, Piedmont and Roxboro(when it was 1/4 mile).

I have a picture from a 1970ND (that my Mother framed) from the same day. The classification and number on the windshield is the same. The name "Law and Order" came from Tom's street racing Chevelle. On the front fender is NHRA Record Holder and the rear quarter has Gordon THompson Chevrolet and a bowtie.

Chris, thanks for the picture, and Ebern, I remember that high winding small block of yours. Those were the days!
