Well for whatever its worth Flatout is/was started and staffed by several of the Fel-Pro employees when Fel Pro scaled back their hi perf division which was about the time they went into bankruptcy and pretty much left the racing arena---Give em a call cant hurt---They won't BS you that's for sure---If they know the answer to your ??? they will give you the honest truth--- Cometic has a very good product to not bashing them at all---Comp 387

Re: 283 head gasket

The .017 number mentioned is the compressed thickness, right? What is the "squished" number when you stack 2 gaskets? I've heard that it's not necessarily .034, or did I hear wrong?

Re: 283 head gasket

I bought the 3995633 maybe 6 months ago but now are no longer available from gm. Did a little comparison with the 4.0 bore gasket and the difference in compression turns out to be almost nothing, 10.639 to 10.632. Looks like I will stock up on the bigger one.
Thanks for the help

I have had this same part number gasket measure up to .019 Be very careful and double check your deck before calling it good. They are not consistant on thickness. Robin Brown also has seen this same type of variance....

Re: 283 head gasket

I spoke to the head of production at Detroit Gasket (the company that supplies Chevrolet with these gaskets) a few years ago about the steel shim gasket situation, and he said their dies are just too worn out to reliably produce good stampings for the 633 pn. He was willing to make another run if someone would belly up for 1000 gaskets and be willing to pay for culls. He said GM told him that the last batch he produced in 1999 would be the end for them because of low demand.
