If you're running 15's, you will be fine in Street, and maybe Pro at some races. Rules, as far as maximum/minimum allowable dial-in ET, safety, what electronic aids (Delay Box, air/electric shift, two-step, transbrake, etc) may/may not be allowed by class vary by track. Best bet before going to a race somewhere is to call or check the track website for what classes are offered, rules, etc. Also, FYI, if you come here tomorrow and don't see this thread, chances are it was moved to the "Stock and Super Stock Tech" Forum on here.

Beef up the suspension on the truck and use it as a tow vehicle and buy a low dollar lower class car....and there's plenty.....get a trailer and go racing!

Jim, I really enjoy the LS Engines and the GM Trucks. I know everything thats gone into the truck (bought it brand new) and I really have a passion for getting this boat down the 1/4 mi.
I'm sure i could get a low dollar, lower class car, but I don't want to fit in, I just love the feeling of beating cars in a pick-up truck (I'm sure I'm the slowest on this site, with mods, guessing @ high 12's to low 13's).
I thank you for your suggestion, but I am going to start here with the truck, and hopefully some day years down the road, I will slowly progress into other classes with it and continue to have a great time doing it.

Oh, I got you.
I raced a Bracket at a Truck Nationals event and it was a delay box. Not a fan, I lost due to a major padding of time in the other lane and some light braking. I raced all out... I still had fun.

Wow 17.49... The truck with the 5.3L (100% Stock) got a best of 15.2 in the 1/4 @93mph

If I have the HP correct the LS1 CM is rated at 350. Now if you were to run I/CM the index would be a 12.10 and you would have to weigh no less then 3670lbs. 3670 - 170 / 350 = a weight brake of 10 which is I/CM. Do you think you can make a LS1 run a 12.10 or better while keeping your truck at 3670lbs(with driver) or higher and following all the rules of SE?

Hope this helps.

Would this cover all LS Series V8's? Or only the LS1?
The LS7 is a 427 making 500hp
The LSX 454 is making 600+hp
But, My Motor is NOT the LS1 it is essentially a LQ9 rated @ 245hp for the 04 Year(Came in the Silverado SS)

Would I use this # Instead?

I would probably want to be into the J or K Class since I think I would run between a mid 12 to low 13. And my weight as it sits right now is 4600 with driver. Soo...

4000lbs (with major weight reduction) - 170lbs / 350 = 10.94 Which puts me in the J/CM Class.

I think I can do 12.5 - 12.99 and compete.

Not yet anyway.
No Problem keeping the truck above 3670#'s!!!

I'll have to go through the rules to see. I'll let you know.

Must follow this and it looks like it may be rated at 320.

Just so I understand....
I class, based on the STOCK 320 HP, but as long as I follow the Class rules, I can modify the HP anount as much as I want?

In the early learning stages, Thanks

Re: Newbie wants to race... But what class??

Yes. Shipping weight divided by factory (or NHRA/IHRA HP rating equals the weight break for your natural class. Using my car as an example. 1992 Olds Toronado Trofeo. 3,444 pounds factory shipping weight. 170 HP rating from the factory, 170 rating by NHRA. 3444/170 = 20.258, rounded up to 20.26. That puts me in DF/S (D Front wheel drive/Stock). You use the 170, in my case, to determine the minimum weight in each class it's eligible for (which is C, D and E/FS). You can add/subtract weight to do this, either subtract weight to move to the top of it's natural class (DF/S), into CF/S, and add weight to drop to EF/S. Top of D is 19.00 pounds per factored HP. So 19 x 170 + 170 (driver weight) = 3,400. (170 is a driver weight, added to all cars, to determine minimum weight. If a driver weighs less than 170, they will have to add ballast to make the 'HP x weight break + 170 = Class Minimum Weight' formula, and can take out ballast if they weight more than 170) You will always use the NHRA/IHRA horsepower rating to determine Class and Weight, regardless of what HP the engine makes on an engine/chassis dyno.

If the factory shipping weight of your truck is 4,500 pounds, and you use the 320 HP crate motor, 4,500 divided by 320 = 14.06. M/CM is the lowest classed CM class, for vehicles with a weight/HP ratio of 12.00-12.49 pounds per HP. I believe, by rule, you can still run M/CM, but you would be at a pretty large disadvantage. You would be better off to use a higher-rated Crate Motor, to get your truck into the 12.00-12.49 range.
