I don't think a 318-4 manifold is gonna be legal. They were 1978 and newer and were Thermoquad only. I think you'll need a manifold with the "little AFB" pattern.
I believe Paul Wong and Bill Bushmaker have experience with these engines. As Jeff said, if the Edelbrock is legal, that will help a lot!

Paul Wong is running the LD4B. It was approved for the 273 mid to late last year. It's probably worth a 25 HP improvement...;)

Back in the early 70`s, I had a daily driver 65 Valiant Signet 2 dr HT with a factory 273/235HP & 4 speed. It had an iron intake manifold, but I later installed an Edelbrock LD4B, but to make it fit, I had to hog out the intake bolt holes, and used flat washers with the bolts. I remember seeing some other LD4B intakes with Chrysler part numbers on them, but mine did not. Was that a D Dart thing, or a over the counter MoPar sold intake?

There was an early Edelbrock LD4B intake for the 273 and sometimes you can find them in Ebay. Yes, many of the LD4B and six-pack intakes were available with factory part numbers and available over the counter. The "D" Dart intake was a single plane intake, not a dual plane. Same intake used in the marine application engines.

Re: Accepted intake manifold

Even AMC had a factory p/n cast into the Edelbrock R4B. In fact, I think all the "4B" series by Edelbrock had a factory p/n cast into them at one time (Buick, Pontiac, AMC, Chrysler...)
Somebody really snookered NHRA on this:eek:

Jeez, too bad you can't put one on a stocker.Especially with a Holley on top.

I have seen copies of the original factory data showing the Holley carburetor as an approved replacement carb and the intake as an over the counter option. Do not know why NHRA has not approved the intake and Holley for the AMC applications, but will do it for other makes.

Lets just say I pulled more hair out of my head on this issue with NHRA than I care to discuss. I presented the documentation for god knows how long, off and on for 10 years. The best statement from NHRA was "we agree with the documentation but don't want to go down that road again like we've done with the Ford parts"

So. Does anyone have the p/n for this intake and better yet a picture of this intake?

LD4B - Chrysler part# 2836139 (?)
http://victorylibrary.com/graphics/LD4B.JPG

I'm pretty sure that the earlier version of the LD4B with the different angled bolt holes would have had a different part #. I'll post it if I find it.

Jeff gave me a hint with his AMC intake designation. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the early Edelbrock 273 intake was called an D4B.
