Aren't 186 also a correct 300 hp head?

I believe the 292 head was available as a production head with straight plugs, which is different from the "turbo" head with angle plugs. The turbo head was not a production head and was originally designed to be used on a turbo indy car engine but was never used, hence the name "turbo" head.

Thanks for the guidance, I will probably go with the 441 version.

Can anyone confirm this? I believe the 492 was available as a straight or angle plug but I was under the impression that the 292 was an over the counter replacement head and was only available with an angle plug.
Anyone have the straight (or angled) goods on this?

292's were never on any production engine. They were over the counter HP replacement heads. I don't really recall if they were angle or straight plug or possibly made both ways but I am going with straight plug only from my vague memory of them.

Bowtie heads came along and that was it for the Turbos as they were indeed called. They were really not very good unless they were ported but were still better than most stock heads.....

It always amazed me that so many 441 heads were so readily available for race cars. They were made in only one year on 350's and in 1970 there were also some found on 400's but those usually had 1.600 exhaust valves if I recall right.

I dug around for a few sets myself as I once raced a '69 Camaro in SS/JA

The 350/255 was a very good combo from day one......Ask Dave Boertman or Bobby Warren....or Bud Rowe....

Re: SS/JA - What heads are legal?

The 492 casting is the service replacement head for the "double hump" (186, 291, 370, 461, 461X, 462, etc) series of heads. It is available in straight or angle plug configurations, only the straight plug configuration is legal in traditional Stock Eliminator and Super Stock combinations.

The 292 casting is an angle plug "race" casting with the exhaust crossover blocked. It was called the "turbo" head because it was made for the Indy car "stock block' program, it is the predecessor to the "Bow Tie" series of heads.

Re: SS/JA - What heads are legal?

"292" – 3917292, or 340292. Both are good performance heads. The 3917292 was
found on 1968 327 and 350 engines, had 1.94/1.50" valves, 64CC combustion
chambers, straight plug configuration, not sure on the accessory holes, and I do not
have any port volume data on these heads. These heads have double hump casting
marks. The 340292 was available from GM "over the counter". This version had angle
plug configuration, 2.02/1.60" valves, 64CC combustion chambers. These were known
as the "Turbo" heads.

The 292 casting is listed as an accepted head on this combo. They are not referring to the over the counter head, there were two different 292 heads.
