SS&DI was the best drag racing magazine ever. Mr. Dirt, Match Race Madness, the in depth technical articles, etc. made it a must read. I am fortunate to have every issue that was published. I fondly remember buying issue #1, with the Ronnie Sox A/FX 1964 Comet on the cover. I knew immediately that I had to get this magazine every month. They don't make them like that anymore.

AS I UNDERSTAND IT, Petersen Publishing (or, maybe one of its successors, but I think this happened before it was sold,) bought it, then sent "Junior Stock Johnny Dianna" personally, out to the East Coast (Alexandria, Virginia) to SHUT IT DOWN.

Which, he did. It MUST have hurt him to do that....

If Petersen had had something to replace it, I could KIND OF understand that way of doing business (No, I couldn't,) but the truth was, they didn't (and HAVEN'T) had anything remotely like it since then.

Steve Collison was bery, bery, good to me, publishing every article I ever sent him, and I am no Mr. Dirt, believe me!!!

It sticks in my craw to this day, they way they killed that magazine and left the market to wither and die.

Shame on them!!!

I don't have them anymore :( but, I bought every issue of that magazine from vol. I, #1 (I think it was Sept., 1964,) 'til it was killed...

And, yes I miss it!!!!

SS&DI started in November 1964. It was basically a spin off of Eastern Drag News, both started by Monk Reynolds.

I also do miss it.

I very seldom buy drag racing action. I could maybe read about 1/4 of it. National dragster is the same way. DRA is nothing like SS&DI. I still read SS&DI every once in a while. Pros and delay boxes really don't do it for me.

Steve was the best, had him come out to Hydramatic Engineering, and did a Tech article on the THM 400. Miss that magazine !

Your Face Book Page....LOL...By the way, your comments, on your pictures explaining what is going on the day that you are racing is VERY INFORMATIVE! I really do thank you for that. You are determined and focus on what you do and it shows.

People like Ed Sarkisian & Bill Lorenzo kept New Engand Racers in the spotlight with Ed writng in depth stories and Bill's photos which had a way with words via his lens.
They kept the "home grown" locals in the spotlight!

Occasionally see "Wild" Bill, however Mr. Ed passed away a few years ago.
SS & DI,
One of the BEST race publications ever!

Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.

One of the things that made the magazine so appealing, was that the Editor, for a period of time, was a guy named Jim Davis.

Jim Davis was a racer. I was fortunate enough to see his car (named, "Automation") in competition at the 1962 National at Indy.

It was either a model A (Ford) coupe, or a '32; I can't remember which, but it ran B-Gas and had a small block Chevy/Hydramatic powertrain, with Hilborn injection. It was fast... and quite competitive.

Having an actual RACER at the helm was an important step in getting that new magazine off on the right foot, with readers like us.

His contribution to that magazine's long-term success was inestimable. I wonder what ever happened to him? He was an excellent editor/writer.
