Danny, as it works out I have one of the bases like in your Speedway link. I will take it with me to the next race and ask D 4 tech if it is OK to run.

Is there a spec on what is an acceptable carb base?I can't find anything
in the "rules".

AIR CLEANERS
Optional. If used, air cleaner must be OEM automotive or retain
OEM configuration. Air-cleaner base may be cut or trimmed, but
welding, bolting, riveting, epoxying, or any other form of
fabrication is prohibited. Ram tubes, velocity stacks, or non-stocktype
base plates or ducting prohibited. Cooling holes prohibited in
radiator side panels, etc. Factory air cleaners and/or scoops that
fit through hood must be affixed to carburetor as per OEM only.

Rich, I saw the same thing in the "book". I guess my question would be:
when does a carb base become a velocity stack?

Terry:
According to one of my carb customers who asked an NHRA tech man about air cleaner bases, the base cannot be higher than the top of choke housing. He said they should be able to lay a straight edge across the base and it should touch the carb. This will keep racers from adding spacers under the base therefore creating a type of velocity stack.

Interesting. I see that for Holley carbs, but if the same rule were applied to 4GCs, AFBs and many other carbs, even the factory bases would not pass.

I had some aluminum cast adapters made up for sale. They are only about 1/2-3/4 inch in thickness that will allow a 4GC carb which has a 4 7/32 in diameter opening to use a pan with a 5 1/8 inch diameter opening which is what most Holley/Quadra Jet carbs are. I have both a shallow dropped base air pan and the adapter which will fit many applications where hood clearance needs to be considered--- contact me for more pics/info---FED387

Danny, does the Speedway Motors carb base pass the "stright edge" test?

Yes it does. I just check it with a Chevy and a Pontiac Q-Jet and the straight edge is dead even with the top of the choke housing. Should be good to go.
