Re: Dana 60 question
Ed, this the exact same problem I had with my dana 6.17. My housing was braced with the LPM cover also. As best I could tell the problem was with the teeth on the ring gear. Nothing you could see but the backlash would get tight in a couple spots. I checked everything and had the gears treated and rem polished I think it was called. They looked like chrome when I got them back. This helped but finally I just loosened up the backlash. Seems like I had as much as .010 thou. difference from a tight spot and the rest of the teeth. Not ideal but I ran it and it lived.
With a 6.50 and a auto. in this car years ago I never had a problem. When I started up again and installed a stick the problem started. Don't know if is the gears they make now or me learning clutch setups as I for sure had it way to tight sometimes. |
Re: Dana 60 question
We had that same trouble with the Dana 60 in Scot LaMar's SS/EA car. I went to put a 5.38:1 Richmond Pro Gear in it, and we found that the spool had a lot of runout. Mike Welfel was able to true it up for me, and the gear went in fine. I even swapped to a lightly used 5.57:1 gear with no trouble a little later. Mostly because it took me 6 months to find a 5.57!
I suppose at some point, that car will get some sort of 9". |
