You can put about a gallon of cleaning vinegar in the radiator and let it circulate for 5 or so minutes and let it sit over night and then water hose it out then fill the system with fresh water and circulate that for 5 or so minutes and dump it. It will clean out the rust and scale in the block and radiator, you just to flush it ienough to get the water back neutral.

I trailered my old boy's Roadrunner Stocker to a radiator shop when he let it sit over a year with water in it.....They back flushed the system and that seemed to help out.

Although if it was seriously rusted =
I suppose you could blow out a freeze plug that way!

I actually added some cascade dishwashing powder to an old motor and it made a difference.

Interesting
Dishwashers prevents water spots when dishes dry.
I like this.

I took my radiator to be cleaned at a reputable radiator shop. Although it used to be TABOO, many racers put a quart or so of antifreeze in the water....

I'm on the verge of ordering Evans Waterless Coolant for my cars. Thoughts or experience with that coolant?

I use 2 bottles of Gunk Water Pump Lube. Goes in like milk. Comes out the same in the fall. Done it for years. No rust whatsoever? I still use a stock radiator.

Learned and used vinagar years ago. Someone put trans fluid instead of toyota red coolant in a corolla. I had to flush it out and used the clear vinegar and wuite a bit for this mess. Those jobs never went back to the mess makers, lol.
Took a few doses but car was eventually good w patience.

Your results may vary, all I can tell you is what worked for me. Years of rust in the radiator with a SBC with iron heads and aluminum radiator. I tried every combo of additives and lubes from water pump lube to lucas additive and others in between and still had rust, always used distilled water. One year I actually read the directions on the bottle of Lucas coolant additive and it said do not use distilled water. Since then I use Lucas additive with gallon bottles of store bought drinking water. No more rust.
