Re: Carb cleaner

The dunk buckets are good for an old dirty carb you're rebuilding or cores you're starting with.

Most prepped race carbs don't get that filthy. A quick clean up, freshen, new gaskets type maintenance, I use the old Berkebile 2+2. Stuff still works and is actually outlawed in some states. Wear safety glasses. Hot water and compressed air is also helpful.

Old trick some one told me long ago - I got into the habit of spraying a bit of WD40 down the air bleeds every other week or so. A little muck in those passages can upset mixtures. I believe the WD knocks the junk and fuel dyes loose from those passages to help maintain consistency. And it's not so aggressive that it damages anything you get overspray on.

Gumout spray carburetor cleaner is great for cleaning the air bleeds.

Re: Carb cleaner

I just rebuilt a pair of 1150 cfm dominators I used 2 bottles of the Awesome liquid cleaner from Dollar Tree, a bucket with a screen. A bottle per carb (They were pretty nasty, but not daily driver nasty of course.) screaming hot water. Let it soak over night, wash out in the shop sink. Blow dry. They came out like new.

Re: Carb cleaner

Vic,
The newer carb cleaners just dont work like the old nasty stuff used to. I do a few carbs each year, mostly for friends and I have been putting them in my Ultrasonic cleaner. I just did a Quadrajet off a boat that was pretty nasty and it turned out nice. Depending on what chemical you use it does not always make the outside look real pretty but it does an awesome job getting into all of the little passages.
Depending on where you are located I would see if you could find someone that has a decent sized Ulatrasonic and just pay a few bucks to have it done. More and more machine shops are getting them for cleaning aluminum heads etc.

I have used methyl ethyl ketone MEK in the past. Just don't leave any rubber parts in it.

You can still get the big carb cleaner pail, however, do not expect it to work like the old days stuff.

If you have an ultrasonic cleaner, this is the solvent to use.
