Had a customer with a similar problem. took 4 runs to slow down and stabilize. turned out to be a worn converter sprag.

Don't think that the case here. Change tranny out to spare trans with same converter and boom within 1-2 (60 ft) every run. Spare is just not as fast because it does not have alum stuff in it. Spare is an point A to point B trans.

Hmmmm, good question. Have not put a gage on "spare" trans because of no problems. All books and literature shows 145-170 is good number.

Is your pressure gauge mounted in the car or is it a diagnostic type for stationary pressure diagnosis?

Are the high gear clutched showing signs of slippage?

Trans guy says no although I'm glad you asked that. Well seasoned Super Stock racer in my area asked the same question. He said "I'll bet it high gear clutches or clearance issue."

If the pump was modified for no external cooler and you've replaced the pump this may be your issue. not certain of it but thought they removed the cooler bypass valve to run no cooler, new pump having a bypass valve and setup for external cooler cause an issue with heat?

It should push through if outlet plugged..Doubt it would take any hp but worth looking at I suppose.
