Re: 3 Speeds

Here's how I see this 3 speed thing..........

For Bryan McClanahan Christmas came early........LOL

3 speeds in 2 speed combos are like divorces........... the only true winners are the lawyers and the manufactures.......... the players are the ones that suffer..............

Seriously, this is a pre-cursor to the merging of SS and GT classes in 2009. Think about it..... 2 speeds, 3 speeds, sticks who cares what trans...now we are all on an equal field...then the next step is to combine classes........A&B- C,D etc...
The larger weight breakes between classes equals more heads up races during elims. and during class runoffs there won't be so many singles..........

I'm thinking this will be a great marketing tool for NHRA to attract sponsor money and increase the payouts.

This will also bring in more contengency monies as the class wars will be resurrected as they were in the past.
Less classes=more money per Class win.

So guys this could really be a good thing for us! I know HD Partners and the NHRA are looking out for the future of class racing. Think of the possibilities here.....

Perhaps, the core pile has become a bit shallow on these 40+ year old antiques?

Re: 3 Speeds

Can anyone clarify this for me. In 1957 GM built a Turboglide transmission that was put in passenger cars as an option. A real piece of crap from what I have heard because it was dropped a couple of years later. I do know that it had 3 forward gear selections, L, Gr, and Drive. The Gr standing for Grade. Was this transmission a 3 speed or not?

Thanks Jim

NHRA thought so one of the west coast 57 Chevies has been running a three speed for over a year

Re: 3 Speeds

what is the average real advantage in a 3 speed vs. powerglide of equal quality???? are we talking a few hundreds or a tenth ????

Re: 3 Speeds

Depends on the combo, in the higher horsepower cars about .05 to .07 hundreds. In a 283 or 265 maybe a tenth
