Re: Lower Class Stockers
I could not resist this thread: For Bill D. The Reider and Wallace "Horsesense" car did go
mid 15.00s and the secret was the rear gears and tranny. The 74 wagon only had the first ford 8.8 rear. Previous yrs only the small rear -max with 4.11 gears. Tom had 5.13s and i think even 5.57s special made for him. These REALLY woke up that pos 2300 hyd. cam engine. Before 1974 all Pintos and Capris were ltd to 4:11 and were 2000cc German engines with a slightly smaller carb. But would wind to 8000 rpm if you knew what you were doing. You were not allowed to change the factory rear in those days.So when REIDER got those gears it was the end for the rest of us who had 1972 and 1973 cars.If i would have had access to those gears i could have easily gone 15s in the 72 and 73 cars. History lesson: In 1972 at the INDY points meet, [ first yr of new rules ] I owned a 1967 chevy biscayne 283 - 2bbl stick car J/S i think. Pretty fast for the day. But to my utter amazement , there was this kid sitting next to me in his 1972 mercury Capri , in the staging lanes with his radio blasting and V/S on his window. This is crazy i thought , what is a car like this doing in the lanes? Street tires and all. Late rounds i drew the capri, thinking this should be no problem. Dumped the clutch at about 3500rpm caught him in 2nd gear ,and then a funny thing happened, the Capri began to pull away from my 283 chevy. Couple rounds later Greg Rice was the winner of the ist Div 3 race and one of the first ever 4cyl winners . I was convinced enough to sell my cheby and purchase the first of my Pintos ,on the very first day they were on sale in sept of 1972. I won many local races and set a NHRA and IHRA record with them. Finally going 15.92 in the 72 car with the 4:11 gears. The moral of this story , if someone wants to build a 72 -73 Pinto or Capri with the 2000cc engine and an 8.8 rear [now legal] i think it will fly. |
Re: Lower Class Stockers
If I'm not mistaken, Kyle Riley won a few division 3 races in the late 90's with his EF/SA Delta 88. I know he finished in the Div 3 top 5 a few times with it.

Re: Lower Class Stockers
I likely have the distinction(?) of winning with the lowest class stocker. I won the 1986 IHRA Northern Nat'ls at Milan with my Z/SA '68 Nomad wagon. It was a great day - had to get by Bob Downing, an N/PSA (double breakout), Randall Campbell's Y/SA (with a .002RT), a killer C/SA and finally Gary Bowers ('85 World Champ) K/SA. Tore down for inspection (yep, really did that in those days) right in the shade on the staging lanes. Bob Marshall won Super Stock. He wandered over and looked at the 230 inline, just grinned and walked away. The old wagon will start its 35th year as a race car in 2009!

Re: Lower Class Stockers
Tom, and Rocky,
Thanks a load for clearing that Pinto business up for me; I have wondered about that for YEARS... and, it all makes perfect sense, now. I think Mr. Reider must have been ahead of his time, to have run those numbers with a stock (OEM) camshaft some 32 years ago... even at the 23 pounds-per-horsepower figure. I really appreciate the time you guys took to answer this. I feel better now, knowing I didn't dream this up... Have a good week!!!! Bill |

Re: Lower Class Stockers
Dennis Oliver won the U.S. Nationals in 1990 with his P/S Impala. If I remember right he had to spot Terrance in the final. Dad finished #7 that year. Prior to that, he also won three other nationals and had a few runner-up finishes with that car as well. He sold that car to Jerry Hefler several years ago after we built our G/S Camaro.

Re: Lower Class Stockers
I remember back in the day when the stock "terrors" in IHRA were Randall Campbell in his 6 cyl. nova wagon, J.T. Allen in his 200ci V6 Malibu pure stocker that would run 1.10+ under the index with the AC running lol, and Ray Head in his 283 2bbl. 1960 Chevy Impala. These guys could cut .00 lights and run dead on like robots. They were not fast but they were usually some of the last cars still running at the end of the day. Don Jackson

Re: Lower Class Stockers
I believe George Williams won the winter nationals (nhra) with his vega wagon in mid seventies.
|
Re: Lower Class Stockers
Don't even have to use past tense! Randall Campbell busted my butt with a double-oh and .01-over in the semis of Saturday night combo at Mt. Park a couple years ago, running his HT/SA '86 Chevy C-10 pickup. I think it's R/SA in NHRA.
gcasey - Awesome! It's good to hear those lost bits of history. |

Re: Lower Class Stockers
PS This is why George Williams raced a vega wagon. George raced a ply road runner with a hemi in stock and did not do very well. One day Marty B. division three tech director said to George __your racing the wrong car__ and George said what do you mean? Marty said you need to be racing your daily driver, your vega! In division three you did what Marty said.

Re: Lower Class Stockers
Not OEM Bill. 1975 was the first year (1975 - 1987) of the aftermarket "lift, duration, and overlap " cams. I'm still running my 1976 Lunati cam. Rocky, good to hear "the rest of the story". I knew about the "special gears" but not the 8.8 in a 1974 wagon only thing.

Re: Lower Class Stockers
It's not how fast you go, but whether or not you go back to staging for the next round.

X-tech man Now you know JT never was illegal."Buddy they cheated me like a dog."[to quote JT]''LOL That was JT's story anyway. In case you didn't know JT passed away from cancer a few years ago. Whether you liked JT or not you have give him credit WHATEVER he was doing he did wide open and with passion.More JT quotes-Buddy I cut that light so close last round that reden flickered a few times and went out .-Man that baby ul'fly. I rather run anybody here than you[ right before you get in car].He won alot rounds in staging lanes before he ever got in car with his "gift for gab".
Mike Taylor 3601 PS Going rounds is fun no matter how slow you go!!! |

Are you talking about cams that still had stock specs but had increased rates of lift ("plus area" cams)??? I think Crane called them "Blueprint cams." But, they were not "any duration" cams, like are legal today; is that right? Thanks for correcting that. Bill |
Re: Lower Class Stockers
That's right Bill. From 1975 - 1987 they had to check lift, duration, and overlap against factory specs. Since 1988 they only check lift. In 1974, I was in the staging lanes at Englishtown and Joe Lunati came walking down the line. He knew that in 1975 those cams were going to be allowed. He gave me his card and said "young fella when you get ready for a cam for that thing give me a call". When I decided to build the 95 HP combination in 1976, I called Lunati. Two weeks later I received the cam. It's been in there every since.

They were both Ford Engineers and I remember sitting in on a few conversations where they discussed getting paid to do R & D work that was related to their car. Yes, they were ahead of their time. Concerning rear ends. Reider sold the Meeks a "Jeep" rear that had a set of 4:88's in it. We took that apart and adapted it to the little Pinto rear. That really woke that car up! I agree, with the lack of gears, I remember having 4:11's in my street Pinto. I thought you could get a 4:30? That's been a day or two ago and I could be wrong. Doesn't really matter now anyway. Interesting you talk about reviving that old combination. I'm pretty sure Toby still has his old stocker sitting in a barn at his mother's house. I know he still had it as of about 5 years ago. Food for thought, I also know his middle brother had the car for a number of years, converted it back to a street car. If a guy took one of those cars today. Did some decent front end work. Tie the subframes. Put some good leaf springs on the back with a set of Cal-tracs and an 8.8 with a good 35 spline spool and axles. If you could replace that spindly 4 speed with something more modern. One of these cars would be dam# near bulletproof. You wouldn't build enough torque to hurt it! Really is an idea to toss around. X- tech man I know JT had several[tech] convictions but I always remember him claiming to be legal and just being done wrong by IHRA. I don't guess you detected sarcasm when I said JT never ran illegal.

Since us fwd racers are such a small (but growing) collection of all stockers, and racers who's cars run 13.00 and slower are against the norm (in the winners circle that is), I find myself rooting for them as well as my own slower stocker. Here's what my memory has recanted that I haven't already mentioned: 1. Stan Kopejtka, nearly won the '05 (?) LODRS Bandimere race with his Dodge Omni. 2. Steve Pohill's been in at least 2 final rnd's at divisional pts races back east with his Ford Escort. 3. Linda Sherman ru'd back in about '95 at an Div. 1 Federal Mogul series race with the Chevy Citation that's currently campaigned by one Mr. Randy Hyman... 4. Randy joined an elite group of fwd racers who went late into elim's at the US Nat's. 5. I came close to winning the '06 Mile High's (quarters), and went 4rnds at this yrs Div 7 (race 1), and last years (race 2). with my Z24. Hope that helps.... |

Re: Lower Class Stockers
GarysZ24, While my friend the late Steve Taylor won quite often bracket racing his fleet of Z24s', I believe the Z24 you are referring to with the runner-up finish at Rockingham in the mid 80's was Mike Ellis from Durham,N.C. It was red and black and he drove it to the track.

Re: Lower Class Stockers
One of my first heroes in Stock was Rusty Canfield. His Charger was a Shelby, but collectors always told him it wasn't because it didn't have the embroidery in the headrest... except Rusty's was the very first one - the rotisserie show car! He helped me out a ton with the Turismo when I was first getting started.
http://www.staginglight.com/stocker/rusty.jpg One of my favorite Stockers of all time is Ray Golanka's Q/SA Caddilac, although I'm not sure that it fits this post, as Ray got it into the 12's back in the late '90s! Yeah, smokin' the right rear tire... :o Rusty gave me a tuneup for the car for first round of my first NHRA race, and picked it up .15! http://www.staginglight.com/stocker/stkvsgolanka.jpg That's one way to make Billy's U/SA Nova look fast! http://www.staginglight.com/stocker/stkanim1.gif |

When Junior C.raced the car we tried to get the car to go .500 under for class.First the 1950's mini round air cleaner went south. Then we removed the rear spoiler.Picked up .2 and over 1 1/2 mph.He got the Wally, just barely. I also took the rear spoiler off Zippy's Spirit and picked up almost 2 mph.I wonder what it's worth on the early Camaros? Ed |
Re: Lower Class Stockers
Ed maybe I should take the spoiler of my car. LOL

Wow, so he's the only fwd divisional Stock Eliminator, and you the only fwd national winner...I guess those of us who're still racing those cars are going to have to get our stuff together, because no one has done either so far this century, although there's been several close calls...Steve Polhill & Stan Kopejtka being the most easily known. You two are of a very elite (small) group that I'm determined to join...perhaps in 2009??? |

It looked like it could be street legal, and since it ran mid-16's (altitude adjusted that would've been close to the 18.0 I got out of mine back in '93 when I first started racing that car), I thought it could be street legal. Now I just wish I had the video footage again to enjoy looking at...so to Mike Ellis & to you Ronnie and the late Steve Taylor's other friends/family (to borrow from Siskel & Ebert movie critic fame), TWO THUMBS WAY UP!!! I often wonder why no one other than those two and now I are the only Cavalier Z24 (or Cavalier period) racers??? I feel I have a good combination, and once I get my driving skills back up to par, I might be someone (else), to give those 12.99 & quicker Stockers fits...I'm sure trying! |
