Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds
You want to hear a funny story on Ron. One year at Indy back when we had our 70 442 we used to have to run together . A tech guy came by and was just looking in our cars. He spotted lose bags of weight in the back floor board of Rons car and made him take them out. So he threw them over by the fence. Then when the guy left he ran back over and put them back in. Fred and Jerry Dover cracked up. NOW those were days.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds
Chuck or anyone:
I think this is the right thread for a question: I'm reading that Ron Garey won SS/E at the 1967 Winternationals. Was that in a 66 W30 or a 67 W30? Also his et & mph if known! I know SuperStock SS/ allowed any intake back then, but I wonder what intake that Olds used - not too many choices back then I'd guess. |
Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds
Not sure of the year but I remember it had an aluminum intake special to that car after that they were sent back to olds and were not allowed to keep it. If I remember there were only 13 made to racers

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds
The 66s were put into SS/E for 1967 because only 50 (actually 54) factory cars were made, in accordance with 1966 stock rules. For 67, 500 were needed and 502 67's were made. So, as a 66, it had TriCarbs and I know of only one aluminum intake still out there, iron was standard for them.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds
Here's a good Ron story: I sold him my SS/H 396/325 68 Camaro in the early 70's..... I could never get it to run with a automatic, I gave him the turbo setup with it.... We took it to Gainesville to the "Turkey Trots" with the turbo 400 in it....It was .15 off ..(not competitive)..We were hauling it in the Ford box truck he had with the 455 Olds in it
We left the track and went to Frischs's.or what ever it was to get coffee. While setting there we decided to put the 4 speed in it, and did... Took it back to the track with SS/HA still on the window, never got it re techned and he went 2 rounds with it like that until the rear end broke....Ran .3 under in SS/HA.. Another story about the Buick: At Indy he got called to tech about the front seats...he told me they were out of a Pinto..wouldn't fold forward to get in the back either.. I said "what are you going to do"? I rode down to tech with him, a guy looked at it and said it was ok...I said I can't believe..his reply: Look at that kid..he wasn't even born win this thing was built ..no problem :) |
