Thanks Robert, It was a very humbling experience. Made my broken rear seem unimportant. Hope to see you at the races soon.

Well writen and well said Ken. Even with some of the bad things that are going on in the country and the world. We are still lucky enough to get to meet up race together at these events. People should try to look for the bright side of things and not dwell on the not so bright side. ( I'm guilty of this quite a bit.) Makes live a little more bearable. Off my soap box now.

Everyone knows the problems I had at this race. I would like to share what happened to me on Thursday. I hope it may help some of us realize, that although NHRA is not perfect we have a pretty good racing deal.

I met a stock eliminator racer named Thomas Sundstrom, he is from Sweden and we met through Class Racer. He started emailing me about how good my stocker ran and he told me about his. We became friends through email, its very interesting how they race stock over in Sweden. They only have about 40 to 50 stock super stock cars. They police themselves, they don't have an NHRA tech, but they follow our rules right down to the horsepower ratings. They only race 6 times a year. They do not have a track they can go to every weekend to even test. The events are setup at airfields and they must get permission to race. They setup all the equipment and when there done its all packed up and taken to the next race. These guys love the sport and are grateful they have a place to race.

Thomas emailed me a few months ago and said him and a two of his friends that also race were coming to the USA to watch drag racing, stock and super stock racing to be exact. He ask what was a good race to go to in the beginning of April, I told him that the Atco Open would be a great race to see fast s/ss cars. He said that's great I will be there. I was not sure he was serious, but he was. He also asked if there was a speed shop near by to get some autolite racing plugs, they hard to find and expensive in Sweden, I told him I would get them for him. Well he showed up on Thursday night right form the airport. Him and his friends had not slept for 30 hours. I was trying to find a ride back home to get my spare rear. I was trying not to have to unhook the motorhome, it would be so much easier just to get a car and shoot home, about 35 miles. It was late and most racers were gone. Thomas said I will take you home and bring you back, no problem. I could not believe it, up 30 hours and I guy I never met gets me out of a jam with no thought about finding a hotel and getting some sleep, just thinking about helping a fellow racer.

What I'm am trying to say is we have it pretty good even when we think its not. These guys would love to have as many races as we have and a place to test basically anytime we want. So they next time you think NHRA is the worst place to race, think of these three guys who would loved to have the opportunities that we take for granted.

Thanks so much Thomas and friends for the help, it made my night so much easier and gave me a greater appreciation for what I have.

I apologies for not giving the names of Thomas's friends, but I did not have a clue on the spelling, maybe tomorrow I can get the correct spelling.

Good morning -- Here's the good news -- the Sun is out and the temps are in the 50's ...........and now the bad -- last night I felt like a took a cruise -- the coach rocked from side to side all night because of the wind and still is gaining speed as I type .Higher winds are expected later today -- not sure how that will affect todays racing ........its off to teardown for me ........

PS-- Kenny - great story and I'm glad you made some new friends and penpals -- send them over to me -- I'd love to meet them .

Wind -- and plenty of it -- so much so that were racing 1/8 mile today...keep you posted .

Re: "Live" from Atco,NJ-PC Richard National Open

And how are they racing the super categories 1/8 mile? It's easy with the others but the super cars usually don't run close enough to the 1/8 index making it harder than just changing a timer setting. As an example, the 1/8 index for S/C is 5.70 and my car typically runs 6.0s. It just changes too much. But then again, the choice could be that or... Don't race at all!

Well so much for SS/Stk stats from this race, looks like the only runs I'll count is those who set records.
I was going to count test and tune runs, but i don't think so now.

Re: "Live" from Atco,NJ-PC Richard National Open

Johnny D --- You hit the nail right on the head -- many racers when they found out about 1/8 mile this morning simply bagged it and left .
Super Street had there first round after everyone had time trials and then came Stock .
Stock noteables -- Parker wins 1st rd after setting record ,Germanski outs the new CJ of Bollman ,Jimmy Whitehead ,after a couple year layoff wins driving for Dean Reibero , Bubba Linke gets his first rd win of the year ,Jeannie Linke beats Steve Sawka in his new AA/SA 69 Camaro that is x-tra sharp ,big headstart of the race goes to Clayton Wright in his U/SA Belvidere SW against David Barton in his AA/SA Belvidere with the win going to "Slo Motion" ,Joe Gabarine got a great light to win 1st rd ,Steve Calabro wins over a running out Todd Hoven ,and Slammin' Sam Murray got a win light in his new Cutlass ride.

More..........
Came back to my coach to post -- thought I would listen to S/S from here but I gotta tell ya -- forget it -- this announcer is no Lewis Bloom -- bring him back ! ! Sorry I'll get S/S next round.......

FYI, the rest of the race will finish tomorrow.. 1/8th mile (I think)..

Seven comp cars (we ran 1/8th mile too..) Funny thing is, 60 - 70 under runs to the 1/8th are only 44 under at best..

Still very windy, but supposed to die down a bit, but I think since they started running 1/8th mile today, that is the way it will finish..

Re: "Live" from Atco,NJ-PC Richard National Open

Wow --what a difference -- today we have the Atco that we've become accustomed to -- sunny and very bright and even with the slight breeze its a beautiful day here .The weather specs speak for themselves -- 49 degrees , 44.7% humidity , 23.3 Grains of water , .15 Vapor Pressure , 29.71 Barometer with a final DA of -45 ' . Racing for everyone is to start in about an hour with SuperStreet going out first -- I'll be back a little later with some round action....................

Update -- 9:15am EST -- I must have missed the memo about starting later this morning -- in the last few minutes the "parading" just started -- I suspect we'll get racing in under an hour ......stay tuned .On another note -- many racers must have decided to stay the night and leave for home this morning ( guess its great food and drinks served last night at the Tiki Bar) .

Here are some more shots on the final day of racing. Most of the pictures are at the 1/8 mile finish line, just for a different perspective. The camera I use is only a 3 mega pixel, its hard to get good shots, but it gives everyone an idea of what's going on.

Thanks Jack for keeping everyone informed. Shoot me an email so we can finish up what we were talking about.

On a side note, I was struck by the lack of response when it comes to a positive post about our sport. With the exception of Robert, Todd an Bill, there seems to be very little interest from members that post the most. I guess its because when they post, it is mostly looking at the bad things in our sport, not the positive things. It is kind of sad that they do not have much to say when there are good things to post about. So be it, enjoy folks, what ever makes you happy. Every time a member comes on here to post what's wrong with our sport, I will try to find something that's right with our sport.

Jack:
A big ol' thanks for taking the crew to atlantic city last night. We enjoyed the "wings and things" LOL.It was great to see some of my race friends for the 1st time in 2 PLUS years.I am reminded what a truly unique "bunch" drag racers are! It is not all doom and gloom today.

At Atco raceway, Atlantic City and elsewhere, people can were found spending money on themselves and others. Each restaurant (chains and local mom & pop locations) we visited were busy. Although car counts were down, it was still very impressive to see folks following their dream of drag racing. I have not attended an 1/8th mile race since I was a very young kid. This decision was a wise decision and was not complained about. After all, do you really want to complain about someone watching out for your safety? This would be like the fools complaining about the inconvenience of changing airplanes due to mechanical difficulties???? Having not raced at Atco Raceway in over 2 years, I was reminded of what an excellent facility this is (those of you know me, know I have not had the best luck while racing at this track). To me, this track is an excellent example of a racetrack run, by a race family, for the racers. The race was completed by 1:45 on Sunday.

Congrats to all the winners at Atco (including the Sway Family!)

Re: "Live" from Atco,NJ-PC Richard National Open

Dean-- Its good to have you back--and you're very welcome -- I too had a super time with you and your extended family the other night .While out I also noticed many of the same things you did -- people are starting to spend again in many ways -- it may be some time but we are returning to where we were" before " .Looking at the positive side of things is helping our economy for sure -- being negative will only drag us further down .

At Atco this weekend I also think that running 1/8 mile was a wise choice even if it was unpopular with some racers .Seems to me that everyone who did race realized that they had better get sharp on the tree or get eliminated very quick -- its that different .Yes , the car count was down but so what -- those who did race had a great time and even if they made it to late rounds were home early last night -- we need to support track owners like Joe Sway who made it all happen......and happen damm well ! ! ! ( can I say that here ? )

Kenny -- I understand last year Santa needed to bring you parts for the engine that "expired" but maybe in '09 he'll bring you a camera if you're good.I'll shoot you an email on that "other" matter .
