I forgot it was thursday, did any of the hemis run? does the live timing work at that race?

NHRA has informed us that stock will have rd. 1 in the morning. They take our $270.00 put us out on terrible track that many stockers spun, and super gas cars were all over the track. I guess that's what we should expect anymore. Thank you.

Live timing wasn't working today Charlie. Audiocast tomorrow so I doubt it will be on then either.

Thanks for the updates Jack.
Nobody controls mother nature and it looks like another challenging weekend....those who tune (de-tune), for poor track conditions should make the most out of a probable ongoing surface weeper condition.

Re: Live from Maple Grove-NHRA Toyo Tire Nationals

Good morning -- they were up very late last night using the vacumn with headlights here at the Grove trying to insure that things this day were put back on schedule .Yes , you read it right -- Stockers are going out for their 1st round first thing today at 8:30 .Even the ones who didn't get a time shot yesterday were put on the bottom of the ladder .

Today's weather at this moment doesn't look too bad with the Sun peaking thru some clouds and temp in the high sixties but the humidity is much lower -- rain is expected later today ( between noon and 3pm ) and tomorrow -- how much is anybody's guess -- local weather channel says localized flooding is expected - just what we don't need .

Heard a rumor yesterday that Maple Grove wants its original date back in September for next season - I'll try to confirm this for you.........Hmmmmmmm .

As for SuperStock class runoffs -- don't know yet if their cancelled but more than likely they are as a whole bunch of classes are yet to run this morning .My thought is their second qualifing shot will also become class with the fastest becoming Wally winners .

Back later as things move on .........

Re: Live from Maple Grove-NHRA Toyo Tire Nationals

Thanks for the updates Jack....It's nice sitting in the air conditioned office and feeling like I'm sitting in the stands this morning at the track. Really sucks for the guys who didn't get a shot in and go right into 1st round this morning, should be a very interesting 1st round all around. I can see lots of 9.70's to 10.20's in S/G. I also heard that rumor about MG wanting the September date back and I also heard that Gainsville might be in April next year....like the 5th or 6th race of the year to save on gas for the professionals...Indy should be very interesting this year when all the bombs drop...

Re: Live from Maple Grove-NHRA Toyo Tire Nationals

I can't believe it but the Sun is still shining with the first rd of Stock completed and S/S class is now almost done . SuperGas up next ........how much longer we'll go before the storms hit is anybody's guess....This morning the weather looks nice but its at 3400 DA--most cars are about .05 slower than yesterday....and its hot - really stinkin' hot...later .

Wow, lots of red lights

Re: Live from Maple Grove-NHRA Toyo Tire Nationals

I just looked at the 1st round of eliminations on DRC. There was certainly a lot of red-lights 1st round, and really bad lights also. Looks like everybody really needed another time trial or two. Too bad the weather and track weeping got in the way.

I'm listening to the audio cast now. At least they are running superstock class.

what happened to the hemis in C2?

thomas sheehan 08-21-2009 01:42 PM

Re: Live from Maple Grove-NHRA Toyo Tire Nationals

Ok..... let me preface this by stating.... my hearing is not the best!
......but..... I was standing at the finish line watching rd 2 of SS class, and a track official was standing 2 feet in front of me. (I could hear his radio)

As all but the hemis had completed rd 2 of class, I heard Bob Lang asking the rear of staging to bring down the hemis (they were all that were left... and the "hurry-up before it rains" was obviously in place).

Another official responded and said there is only one hemi back here (three were left in class competition). Bob Lang said to send him down and give him a bye run (since the other guys were not there).

Two or three minutes went by and no body came around the corner. Then I heard Lang say to send the hemis down the return road and start running rd 2 of stock.

I believe they all forfieted class by not being there on time. I'm not sure why the one (not sure who it was) that was there didn't take the bye run.

After big showers and storms this afternoon the Sun is back out ( at least a little ) and three Jets ( NHRA - Atco Raceway / Franklin Trailer and Glick Fire Equipment ) are on the track trying to dry it enough for the Pro 's tonight -- looks like they may pull it off .Later ..........

Were all/most of the red lights in the same lane?
Glad to hear they have lots of dryers out there preping/drying the track.

How about a miracle -- thats what it was tonight -- AT 4pm I would have bet against any cars ever going down the track tonight and yet all the Pro's got a lick in -- and for the first time in many , many races the stands were packed with real paying fans -- not that freebie stuff . Maple Grove and NHRA did do their part in trying to help fans afford coming to the races by offering a special ticket rate after 5pm tonight only -- 19 bucks a head -- not a bad deal for them to see a Pro show and fireworks afterward .

Tonight it was eat on the run -- stopped by Uncle Buck's for quick couple of goodies and then it was off to the LaBreaque compound for dinner and then met some friends here for a drink - whew ! ! ! I'll sleep tonight for sure . Also thought some of you would like seeing the sunset tonight -- words can't describe ....later .

Update Friday 11pm EST -- And then the rains came back ! Just like they said they would and ugly , very ,very ugly........is it Hurricane Bill ? ? Local flooding is expected tonight with more thunder storms on their way tonight and tomorrow .... very bleak outlook for Saturdays activities ............but I've been wrong all weekend so.............or maybe another miracle is in order .

Also wanted to mention teardown was held today with four S/S cars getting the full treatment and four Stockers getting a minor deal ( carb off etc but not a cylinder head ) --I'll try and get a list and results tomorrow .

Rain came down heavy about an hour ago but nothing since . The folks here must know something I don't ( which is entirely possible let me assure you ) about this weather front as they had the vacumn out this morning already .The latest numbers are 73 degrees with 81% humidity and 102 grains of water -- yep , its wet out . We're presently at 2600 feet and climbing - oh, and the barometer a whopping 29.28.No Sun this morning - cloudy and very overcast with heavy fog but lifting somewhat . None of this sounds not very good for racing but just like yesterday anything is possible .All of this kind of makes you want to just stay in bed 'till it all goes away . Nah !

Jack,
Last week my Dr asked about drag racing and what was the most important part;
I said "LUCK"
so many races are won on luck, sure skill but you have to be lucky with everyone being about =.

2nd would have been : MONEY !
as a lot of good racers stay home because they don't have the $500.00 or so a week to race NHRA div. or maybe $ 1,000 for a National..

Tk 3300

What would you have said ?

I'll agree with you on that.
There are quite a few real good racers. But the luckiest one is the winner. You need the right breaks at the right time.

Another miracle -- it hasn't rained since about 8:30 and they are a half hour from racing I've been told by Pit Control people .S/S is out first with round #1 as they are warming them up now .Speaking of S/S -- yesterdays teardown brought four of them to the barn and only one came out legal -- more later .Six stockers were picked but only three won first round for a mini-check and all were OK .

Pictured below is some of the equipment the NHRA brought out this morning to dry us out .Also is one of the NHRA's Safety Safari GMC dually pick-ups which will soon be collectors items after this year since Ford will be the "Official Truck" .

1050am.... update

SS'ers were in the lanes...
SS'ers were told to "go back to the pits"..... we got squirters again!

They will start with Pro Motorcycles when it dries.

Jack, what SuperStockers got sent to the barn? And who got bounced?

Re: Live from Maple Grove-NHRA Toyo Tire Nationals

Bob Phillips was in the barn.. not sure who else.

S/S just ran first round after water coming up in between runs.. also some breakage... 2-1/2 hours in the lanes.. results will be up soon I am sure..

BTW, (verified by my daughter) - the tooth fairy DOES make it to Maple Grove Raceway.

Everyone is just chomping at the bit to get this race going and maybe today it will happen .Even at this early hour I'm hearing sweepers and vacumn's working on the track in preparation for final elimations .Even though its not a "Chamber of Commerce" day as they say its not bad -- a little cloudy with the Sun peaking thru in places ( see pic below ) . After the Pro's got cut off last night things were not looking up but the outlook is much better now for finishing on time .The place was once again packed before the storm came last night .

Today is milder weather wise - just a little -- 73 degrees - 67 vp - 29.22 barometer - 77% humidity 2800 ' DA but don't let these numbers fool you as its burning off fast this morning ( morning dew etc ) .

Got to spend a little time with my old Tech buddy Travis Miller ( see pic) and it was really nice exchanging tech thoughts and talking about the "good 'ole days" .

Its 7am -- how do I know for sure ? The Jet is running on the track -- a very good sign this morning .....later .

Looks like a Monday morning schedule for the sportsman categories.Frank "If I don't out ET you I'll
cut your eyes out" Manzo did it again in TA/FC.He gets my vote for sportsman of the century.
Thanks to those who congratulated me on the first round hail Mary.It really wasn't rocket science, just good old bookkeeping. The second round CRS came into play.
There were rumors of this race moving to Oct. next year.I hope it comes to pass. This and the Dutch back to back would be great.
In spite of the weather my little group made the best of it with good food and just great companionship.
Thanks to Todd Bednaz for stepping up to give Ron Infantino his expertise on a heads up run.Ronnie picked up almost .4 and made a race of it with the Forarties. That was a fun race to watch.
