Mike Carr .. You are right . My wife bought the car new in dec. 1968. I have race in SS/I , SS/H ,SS/G ,SS/F .. Held records in the H,G, F, all in the same yr.. It is titled and taged to this day..1969 Mustang 428 CJ.. Neat Post . Red Le Blanc Happy New Year Guys and Girls ..

i bought my 1972 gto march 1981 and have raced it since then. jerry stealy owened it for 2-3 years before i bought it and phil supka had it before him not shure when phil got it but it only has 20 thousand on the speedo

Blair Patick's present 68 mustang is Jeff Velde's old car, in which Blair purchased the car from Marvin Dunahoo who is running a mustang II in IHRA Super Stock.

I have a story on Ray Paquet's 67 Fairlane, I'll read it and find out where he purchased it from.

Im not exactally sure but Donnie Moore has been to every National event Rockingham has ever had in IHRA. Not sure when he started racing that Mustang and Mike Boyles who has raced the 57 Chevy Wagon since 73 I think.

And Ronnie Hamlin who has a brand new Herb McCandless built duster that has never been raced, built in 1975.

Jim Weakland Div 5 raced his 1968 Camaro in Super Stock for around 30 years until he sold it to someone overseas I believe in late 2008 or early 2009. He was still setting records with it up until he sold it.

My dad took delivery of the car January 2nd 1966 (44 years ago today). It's originally a '66 427/425 4-speed car. Dad bought all the hi-performance options with the car and raced it from day one. My Mom and Dad drove the car from Pennsylvania to Florida on their honeymoon in November of '66. He converted it to a '67 in the mid-70's so he could run the automatic trans with the big block in Super Stock. My dad figures the car has more miles on it over 100 miles per hour than it does under...

James has been racing a 55 Chevy for as long I as can remember however I don't think its the same car.

The original was damaged in a towing accident, (motor home was being towed by a wrecker I think) coming back from Memphis many years ago.

I think the car he is racing now is a different car but I could be wrong, Ed Wright would know.

Division One is loaded with "heritage" race cars. Reference any qualifying sheet and you will see the same names and cars for many years, especially in Stock Eliminator.
Ken Montgomery's SS '65 Plymouth A990 has to be number one on the D1 list.

I bought the 69 AMX from Ray Whinery, Lisbon ohio. he was the original owner it was a factory race car delivered to Bill Swad motors in Columbus,Ohio. Ray raced it from 1969-1974. i have raced it ever since. It has never been on the street except in a trailer. For a long period of time these were the most factored cars(80hp). Originally rated 340hp factored to 420 hp

i have a couple of one's i'm not sure of but somebody might be able to confirm,dickie ogles ss/b camaro and ken hutchison's ss/d and also the rachford family from northern ky kris and his dad george have had a 69 torino cobra that george started racing in d/s and still have and are racing today.

Hi Mike. I have a story to add to your AMX, and also a question about a CJ Mustang in relation to Lisa Buckingham's story.

Dad found a photo of your car from 1971 Indy, and an entry from that years Entry List. SS/D AMX, green, driven by Herb Mecklin of Columbus, sponsored by Bill Swad motors. I'm guessing this is the car you have now?

The one '68 Nitro 9 Mustang SS/F, owned/driven by Jeff Velde. The story we thought we knew, it was originally owned/driven by Bob Glidden, became the Nitro 9 of Brandon and (Gene) Turnage, then went to Velde, then ended up in Fairmont WV and was raced by Steve Retton. This may have been the car that Ms Buckingham referenced in her post, ending up at auction? I guess there was also a second Nitro 9 Mustang that is now Blair Patricks? Again, if we have falso info, we apologize.

Hey Mike - your Nitro 9 trail is pretty accurate. It went from Glidden to B & T to Velde. Then I bought it from a friend of Velde's in the midwest. I raced it once and broke the motor, but got it fixed with the help of Tom DeCamp. We raced it for a year and broke the motor again at the Popular Hot Rod race in Martin, MI.I Then I sold it to a guy named Robert Cornette in Kentucky. To the best of my knowledge it was never raced again in NHRA but I could be mistaken. It may have ended up in W VA. We were told it surfaced at a collector auction and brought big money. The Nitro 9 deal was with B & T and to the best of my knowledge there was only one. All I know for sure was that I did own it and sure wish I still did! lol

Have to agree on the amount of racers in Div. 1 that have been out there competing for so many years. Seems like Ken Montgomery might be getting the nod here. Car bought as a race car from new. Ken ran most Div. 1 events year in and year out and I don't think he missed racing at least some every year since 1965. Again he has cut back his racing mostly due his automotive repair shop takes a lot of his time. His car is a one owner deal and raced for 45 years. This is an excellent subject and and lot of good racers mentioned by everyone.

I started going to IHRA races with my brother in 1982 and Mike Bowles high winding "Good ol Charlie Brown" 57 wagon was the man to fear in super stock. I don't know when he started with the car but he has won countless races and a championship or two with it. I know he has raced it with 265's, 283's single and two 4bbl's. Mike is a great guy, and the screaming stick wagon always drew the crowds attention! Don Jackson

Dad bought the 68 Corvette he has now, in 1970. Its been a race car since later that year. First in Super Stock, now as a stocker.

Dan Fletchers 'Checkmate' 69 Camaro. Bought new in 69. Thats a tick over 40 yrs...all as a race car. Thought it was worth a mention.

Current was purchased in 1985,took 3 years to build, started of as a bracket car and ended up has stocker,so from 88 to now, backs it 22 years.

Mike according to jerry white the mustang in question went from Glidden to Branden and Turnage and than to Steve Retton in nearby Fairmont WV He sold it Jerry White here in Grafton, WV who raced it a couple years before he sold it to Eric Wilson in Clarksburg WV. Eric than traded the 68 SS/F car to Carl Holbrook for a 69 SS/GA car. Carl put an automatic in the 68 car an renamed it Instant Action which later went to Donnie Moore. According to Jerry, you are right Branden and Turnage did build a second Nitro 9 SS/F car.

Mike , you are correct dad bought it in 1979 still races it in IHRA (won world championship 1983) & NHRA ,not the oldest race car but still has the same paint job on it from HOLBROOK.
Dad does have 1968 notchback 428cj car that he got in 1970 that has been raced every year ,started in stock went to formula stock then modified now back to super stock ..
Trying to get pics out and try to post them ,,
also Blair Patricks car was the Dorsey Gray Ford car that the Dunahoo's bought from Jim Morgan

I know Truman bought his 68 Firebird new after coming back from Vietnam, and his brother both at the same time. Still races it today in stock class. He has raced in SS and Modified too. It was 1967 or 1968.

Ray Paquet is in there too, I will check out the dates and relay later.

I have a good picture of dad & Mike Boyles running at ROCK in 72 or 73 dad actually ran ROCKINGHAM in 1969 when it was AHRA 67 FAIRLANE 427 ..1970 is when he got the 68 notchback 428cj car started racing it and even ran in 88 when BILLY MEYER dropped S/SS / MOD he ran 10.90 class .4 pro tree foot braking he wanted to be there bad I guess .So rite now we are at 40yrs and counting on the notchback"COBRAJET" & 30years and counting with the fastback "INSTANT ACTION", with many more to come I hope

Holbrooks convertable Cobrajet SS car was owned by an electrician in Billings Mt a while back. I saw one racing at the Division race in Acton Mt this year & I think it may be the same car

My friend Bill Mitchell,who I met in 1980,has a 55 Chevy sedan that originally had a Pontiac rear end in it, a straight axle, a fiberglass front end, and a 409 with Z-11 heads. He had the car since the mid 60's when they all raced at San Fernando. We got to racing in the 1980's,and after a few insane outings to OCIR,the car went to Dave Tuttle's, and came back as low as it was high. Bill ran a 348 with some kind of stroker kit(1/4" by 1/8")which made it a 427,409 heads, and the most one off single four barrel Holley intake you could imagine, a Powerglide, a nine inch Ford rear end, and he raced this car in Super Gas starting in the early 90's. Bill used to race Super Street Association races at Palmdale,usually doing quite well at them.He and the late Dennis Smith ran around together. After retiring, he moved from Granada Hills to Chino Valley,Arizona.I've seen him once since then,at Speedworld, I hope all's well with him, he still has the 55, and I guess that makes him the one with the same race car the longest that I know of. Bill, if you read this, call me!!

turnages nitro nine mustang after steve retton purchased it..... the story i heard was retton lost an eye at work, and got a couple hundred thousand dollars from the insurance company.... he went out and bought a motorhome, open trailer and the turnage mustang.

great pictures not sure about the 1st. pic but 2nd one is for sure cause Charles Adler was the original owner of the car , i have always wondered if the brandon& turnage pic was the same car have been told it was cause the 1st. car had Bob Glidden race cars on the fender never seen these others cant wait to show them to dad ..

OK, so I'm not racing this car, right now, I'm racing the Dart. I bought this Roadrunner new in 1969 and still have it, running and ready to go. Here are pictures from 1970 and one from 2007.
