Re: Let me get this straight.
Michael Beard, you left out that "why" you make $$$$$$$$$$$$$ is that you are a HELL of a RACER/ DRIVER.
Started with a TOW BAR [ early 70's] Moved to open trailer [last 70's] Then a drive on [EMMONS still has my ramp truck] ['83] Went back to open trailer. ['87] 32 ft Living qtrs. gooseneck [ '92] Purchased a new home gooseneck didn't want to back up driveway Then came 1st motor home[24ft] with 26ft Pace enclosed [ '94] Then came 28ft Pace and 2nd motor home [32ft] Then I had BRIGHT Ideal of racing [2] cars. Already owned both then came 28 ft stacker from Performax. 3rd motor home 2004 Endeavor with 400 HP if that wasn't enough My buddy gets out of racing and I buy his Freightliner Motor home but still have 28 ft stacker. I would not like to tow with another motor home. Will always you a truck type motor home for towing. Point is "JSL" I choose to spend my $$$$$$$$$$ on what makes me happy and comfortable. My daughter love the truck motorhome while we are traveling and at the track. Point of this is you have to be happy in what you do. Trust me I have sold out a couple of times and it cheapter to just keep most of everything that has to do with racing if considering quitting. |

Re: Let me get this straight.
OK, good thread.
I'll pile on here a bit. I'll admit, when I walked away from this back in 1988, I still had a hard time understanding how so many people could afford the rage then, enclosed trailers. Fast forward to today, I'm stunned by all the 40' plus trailers, stackers, motor/toterhomes, big rigs you name it, you're right, these are weekend racers! Like others have said, if you have that kind of money, who am I to tell someone what they should or shouldn't have. Like any hobby, you participate at the level you are comfortable with, or can afford. Right now, all my spare funds are going towards putting our bracket car back together and collecting the pieces to assemble our stocker. When my partner and I return to the track one day, I imagine initially, it will be with the same old 22' trailer I've had since 1977. I do believe we will repaint it, LOL! As for me, I think I will buy an enclosed trailer down the road. I've seen a lot of reasonable deals pass by. Both my partner and my wife keep telling me, get the cars running first. Once I have two cars running, then it will be time to purchase a second trailer. Jason, yeah, it can get brutal on here from time to time. Listen to some of these guys. There are some smart people here and you can learn a few things if you're willing to listen. Robert Swartz |

As a matter of fact... I bought Bobby's 1999 Dodge Cummins Dually & 28' Pace Trailer in 2001... The dually now has a touch over 200,000 miles and the trailer is on it's 3rd set of tires... Thanks for the great deal ..... Got anything else that you want to sell????? Bob |
Re: Let me get this straight.
A counter to my own argument. A lot of people sitting in those pits are likely quite upside down in their "rigs". While there are plenty of people that race that own what they have, there are plenty of people that live beyond their means. What you're seeing in racing is just a microcosm of the big issue our society has with living beyond their means.
I know I always look at prices for rigs every few months, in case I get the itch again. I see prices dropping big time. |

Good point. Can also add, many of these rigs are likely "owned" by racers whom own businesses or have livelyhoods that can support such items. My wife's boss is an excellant example of this. He races circle track dirt cars. My wife takes care of the books, he funnels a lot of the racing stuff through his business. I can't count how many different trucks and trailers he's gone through. Right now, he's running off his father-in-laws equipment. He's uses all this as a write off. If you're in a financial position to do it this way, I can't blame anyone. I'm just not in that kind of situation, I have to pay my own way. Until the finances say I can, I won't be in an enclosed rig anytime soon. Right now the money is better spent prepping the cars. Re: Let me get this straight.
I used to dig seeing 1970's Division 7 Pro Stock racer Kevin Rotty roll in to the track with his factory framed Camaro on an open trailer being pulled by his wood paneled 1969 Chevy Kingswood wagon, and hand all the high roller's their butts. He and Richie Zul were my favs back then, the rig has never made any car any quicker.

Re: Let me get this straight.
I think that Jack and Rock have said it all there's nothing wrong with being comfortable if you can afford it. You can rough it out but the enjoyment factor can be affected by your pain threshold your willing to live with. I first brought a motorhome to the race track in the eighties to bring my family with me when I race, this way the children had a place to eat and sit while Dad was running his car.lol This went a long way at keeping the peace between my wife and I. I find it a very nice way to travel to the races and now I don't have to get hosed by the locals(motel, restaurants) with their over price rooms just because the circus is in town. Love to see the enginuity of racers when it comes to their transportation. When it rains it takes to second to get everything ready for the road, try that with a tent.(I know I've done it lost of time). If you can afford it go for it. CR
