The NHRA bashing on here sure does get old......

I am not bashing - the are pure and simple observations. If you think it's acceptable to be in the tower all weekend rather than be with your racers, then so be it.

I race both, and I am free to say what I see.

[QUOTE=Beth Kieffer;216601

Last weekend at the NHRA Indy Fall Classic, not ONCE - and that includes time spent with Tony in the WINNER'S CIRCLE - not once did I see our division director Jay Hullinger. He couldn't even take two minutes away from his throne in the ivory tower to come down and be in a picture with his class winners. We did however have our photo taken with the track manager, a very nice young man. And Ritch Bowers (who really SHOULD be our director as he acts more like one than Jay) was everywhere doing Jay's job. Thank goodness for Ritch.
:D[/QUOTE]

Beth - We here in Division One have a whole different deal as our Division Director Bob Lang not only comes out of the Ivory Tower but doesn't spend most of the race weekends in it -- I've watched him do everything from fixing the plumbing to race track prep and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty- and always has time for photos ....................

We were down four times during stock Q1 for the Nitro Jam this morning - two I know of Monty Bogan, don't know if it's terminal. And Mike Beard broke a rear end again in the water box. So, if we stick to tradition, that means he's gonna win another championship! LOL

Some more pics.

I took a ton of pics during SuperStock, too many to post the way I have been, so I downloaded them to Webshots.

Broke the rear off the line, but was .003 for the AllStars qualifying ladder at least! Tons of offers for parts and cars before I rolled to a stop, but whenever the rear goes it takes the sprag with it. Will be driving Zac Ross's Avenger (Thanks!). Same family that I boght the Volare from years ago. Still have a Q run and a bye 1st rnd of the TOC, so I should get acclimated. If the .003 held up, should get a bye 1st Rnd of the AllStars tomorrow too.

That's what you get for running 4 yrs of racing in one year! Seriously considering a Dana now. Gotta bulletproof the workhorse.

Thanks to all who offered assistance!

Ok, well one round of TOC HR and Stock are in the books. They announced before they started the pro show that the rest of the sportsman classes will run their first round of the TOC and that's it. Done for the day. We will start out tomorrow with second round of the TOC at 10:30 am, and will run it until it's done. I don't know when the All Stars will get run.

Well our very own x-stocker ,Chip Johnson just won the summit super series box et class and a lot of nice prizes and money. Way to go Chip, not bad for a used to be stock class racer.

THE LEGEND! Way to go Chip! Congrats also to Chris Hall from Utah for winning the Summit No-Box World Championship and making the loooong ride worth it!

So far so good in the Ross Family Racing Avenger: .023 and .011 on the tree, but have to run Jeff Ross himself in the morning! Great car, having fun!

They actually would allow you to withdraw and get your money back on Sunday morning if you couldn't stay...I agree on the bracket race. Let the locals come back next weekend and have their bracket race.

Re: Live @ VMP, IHRA

I heard there were like 6 cars in No-Box and 11 in Box in the ET classes. I'm pretty sure that those weren't the cars that held up the schedule.

Friday started out slowly with multiple downtimes for breakage and oildowns, then it rained Friday afternoon. We only got through 1 qualifying round for everyone. Saturday continued with more breakage (myself included) and numerous oildowns. Sunday ran much smoother, but there was still some downtime here and there, and the night was cut short by another oildown. They should be able to finish everything very easily and very quickly today - probably about 4 hours. So less than half a day Monday, ran less than half a day Friday --- so a total of 3 days on track to run the Tournament of Champions, the All Stars race, and a National Event. Took 'em almost 5 days to run the NHRA Div. 1 race at Atco, so take your pick. Neither event went as planned, and both sanctions did their best.

I'd like to thank Jeff and Zac Ross for letting me drive the Jeff's Auto Body Avenger in the Tournament of Champions and the Summit All Stars race. I bought the Volare from them back in 2005. They definitely have some great cars! I made it to the semis in the TOC (will wear the #3 next year), falling to eventual World Champion Richard Alford, who defeated Brian Rowe in the finals. Lisa Bolton was the other semifinalist, in her NAPA H/CM Dart Sport. Alford, a many-time track champ in bracket racing and former Bracket Finals champ was driving "The Total Look" E/CM Camaro for the Pearsall family, and Brian Rowe, this year's IHRA Div. 9 Champ, who otherwise needs no introduction to the ClassRacer audience, was driving Richie Decola's Southern Crane E/FIA Camaro.

In the TOC for Super Stock, Mike Volkman trailered Scotty Richardson with his GT/GA Sebring with a dominating .012 and dead-on 0 against Scotty's close .016 and dead-on 6. Surprisingly, it was just the second career win for Volkman; his first coming earlier this summer at the Union County Pro-Am, but consistent performances have finally yielded the deserved results. Bryan Worner and Clay Bullard were the semifinalists.

In the Summit All Stars race, I staged up the Ross Family Racing A/FCM Avenger against the Top Notch Auto A/CM Corvette of defending event champ and former NHRA World Champion Terry Taylor. I had a tiny .016 to .023 advantage on the tree, and Taylor got the stripe by .004 to break out by .006, while the Avenger ran a dead-on 10.905. Division 2 Super Stock Champ Clay Bullard wheeled his BTS Tire & Wheel SS/Production Camaro to the All Stars win over Moser Engineering's Larry Cummings on the strength of a significant holeshot.

Re: Live @ VMP, IHRA

I apologize my updates went away yesterday.....I have to take orders from customers on Sunday, so with three races being run (myself in two of them, my Alex in all three) in addition to having to "work for a living" at the track, I had a long, extremely stressful and busy day.

It's gorgeous and sunny and breezy today, they are starting with the two Superstock pair that had to run last night before Mike's unfortunate situation occurred. Mike's misfortune makes a bye run for Alex next round, so knowing that we decided we had no choice but to stick around for today, otherwise we might have pulled out early today.

Awards ceremony was nice, well attended though some big names were MIA (Mike Beard for instance.....but he has a recovering wife at home, so he is excused). Nick Folk won the Div. 5 performance award and he was not there either even though I believe he was on the property. Awards started at 10:30, but by the time everything was handed out, pictures taken, etc., I believe it was 12:30 when we got back to the motorhome. I was whipped!

I don't take pictures during eliminations - superstitious about that - so no more photos from me. The last time I video taped an eliminations run Alex scattered a motor, the camera stays in the motorhome now.

I will report more later as there is time.

Sorry I couldn't stay for the awards "banquet" or for the completion of today's race. I took my wife in for gall bladder surgery Thursday morning. Her mom and aunt came down from Ohio to look after her, so after making sure she was all settled in the recovery room, she let me go with the stern admonition, "Go WIN!" Her family left yesterday morning, so she was left home alone with the dogs until I could get back. She's very sore and gets worn out easily, but is recovering.

Fix-It List: Wife, ring & pinion, trans, and a flat right front (cut a tire every time I go to VMP!) Even so, it was still a great weekend!

Dave Turner 10-18-2010 05:02 PM

Mike, I thought the flat was your NC version of the "Denver boot"......on review, I could use some of your bad luck!

Congrats and thanks for allowing the yellow car to leak into a few of those great photos.

Re: Live @ VMP, IHRA

Yep, my Alex made it to the finals!!!! I thought for sure it was gonna be his day but not meant to be this time.....we are still thrilled with how well the cars performed this weekend. The motor in Moneymaker has been in for two seasons straight now and it's time to get freshened.

So much attrition this weekend and feeling very fortunate it avoided us. Our condolences to everyone who suffered - especially Jim Reynolds in that gorgeous Bel Air, picked a terrible time (semi finals) to blow the transmission. And thanks to some jerk who broke a bottle in the pits, his doberman got cut pretty badly. Shame on someone out there who broke it and didn't clean it up. Must have been a spectator because racers would never do that!

It was great to see some good friends and make some new ones. I enjoyed meeting Whip Wilson and hearing some of his stories from younger days in the staging lanes - wow! This is the bestest sport in the world with the nicest people - everywhere we go!
