I liked John Duesenberry`s `68 when he put the Jack Roush V 6 in it and set the record first time at the track in SS/DS. Always liked that car,and driver. It was definatey unique the the little motor in it.

Al Joniec's 1968 Cobra Jet (SS/E)
1968 NHRA Winternationals Super/Stock Eliminator Winner

He sold the car to Drake Viscome of Carmel, Ford (Carmel, New York).
Drake never raced it, and sold it to Harvey Wilson of Connecticut.

Harvey raced it at our local track Dover Drag Strip. (69' thru 71').
I saw it many times. Gave the Hemi's fits.

Here's a pic of Don's Mustang courtesy of Bill Truby. And the Mustang was before the Fairmont. Don also had an IHRA Super Modified Maverick.

Didn't the Coal Digger later become the Stout and Bruce car that Paquet beat in an Indy ss final?

That is correct. Bill bought the car from Dad, then Harold had it.

Donnie, the last time i saw it it was on a trailer at a rest stop i think coming back from the Gators and Mike Mckinney was driving it. I got to see that engine apart a couple of times and it had some "VERY" interesting headers on it. That car was like a mini pro stocker in its day. Tom

We were just talking about those headers the other day! The first time I saw them was in tear-down at the SPORTSNationals in '75-'76. Jack (Roush) told me to get some rags and cover the "special features" and put the headers in the trunk and shut it. Sometime in the early eighties, I saw a small ad in the back of a magazine for a set that looked just like those. I'm sure others had 'em, but it took a while before they were common knowledge!

In 1975, I believe, the Coal Digger made the trip from KY to the Winternationals on an open trailer pulled behind the Nitro 9 enclosed truck. It'd be nice to have a picture of that! Clyde Brandon and Gene Turnage were around here quite a bit back then.

 While we're in this neighborhood I've got a Ford question: Didn't somebody run a 71 Mustang Boss 429 for awhile. I think it fit in SS/D or E. I wanna say it was a Harold Stout car, but I've slept since then.....:o

Re: Best Mustang Super Stock-All Time?

Boss 429 Mustangs were only produced in 69 & 70, the 71`s did have several versions of the 429 Wedge engine available. A local guy ran a 70 Boss 429 in SS/D briefly in the mid 70`s , but it was not a very serious effort, and wasn`t close the index.
Mr. Bowles, I was at the 1979 Fallnationals in Seattle, and I gotta say, your Dads Fairmont Super Modified was very memorable. As I recall, it not only won Modified Eliminator at Seattle, it also won either best appearing or best engineered. What ever became of the Fairmont? That was one of my all time favorite cars.

Rory,

Being a newbie, I don't want to get busted for hi-jacking the thread, but to answer your question, The Fairmont never left Dad's ownership. It's safe and sound in the shop. I'd be glad to answer any questions if you (or anyone else) would like to PM me. It won Best Appearing Car at Seattle.

Ed Nowakowski (I hope I got that right!) took the Fairmont from a very rough Don Hardy roller to a beautiful show piece. Ed had an equally beautiful pearl white Mustang named Mean Disposition that ran S/S

Here's an early shot most have never seen of the Coal Digger. The car was driven home from the dealership to the garage to start getting it race ready. It came from the dealer with a Mach 1 decal on the left fender only, but the car was a Boss 351 new, then later rebadged to run the Cleveland.

Dont forget Jim Morgan from Maryland and his S/S 428 Mustangs. He was probaly the only Mustang racer using a 12 bolt Chevy rear back in the day. He never won a natioal event but he was a 2 time Div. 1 Champion, many time class winner, and one heck of a good engine builder today.

That would be the one...that's an "official" NHRA photograph, taken at Seattle. I have the 8"x10" of that. If there's interest, tell me which forum is best, and I'll post some more Fairmont pictures.

Thanks for the welcome, now what about those Mustangs???

Here's one of the 1976 Indy final that Kyle Carrothers sent me a few years ago. I have no idea where/who he stole it from! : )

I've seen the finishline shot of Harold and Ray, but what year was that ('82?)? It's hard to believe that car never won a national event, but the "climate" back then wasn't very favorable to Ford.

I rember watching the Coal Digger at my local track (Paducah, Ky.) when it was new. Many times it was Bennet vs Bowles, so it was always a good race.

Larry,

As far as I know, Paducah was the last track the car went down before it was sold to Bill Bruce. Probably late Oct. or November of '76. Might've been a super stock meet of some sort.

Which Bennet was that?

With regard to the Best Mustang S/S All Time, who really ruled the 60's? I know there were a lot of big names that ran the factory CJ's, but who were the drivers/cars that took home the trophies?

The first winner at a Major Event.
Al Joniec in the 'Rice-Holman' SS/E Cobra-Jet.
1968 NHRA Winternationals.
Launched off the line like no other.

How about the first Mustang Super/Stocker...
In 1967, at the Winternationals.
Who ran the 1967 Mustang GT 390's in SS/E and SS/EA.

Hi guys Im a newbie here, I ran across this thread doing a search for the coal digger mustang. I have a good friend trhat purchased that car from Harold Stout in 1985, and it has sat in his private collection since then. I'm going to try to post some pictures of the car as it sits, he was happy to see some people remember the car. If anyone has pictures of this car in action and you would like to share or sell them Im sure he would be glad to see them. He also has Tom Schumacher's 69 Masheter Ford Mustang .If anyone has any pictures of this car in action at the track or where ever he would be glad to see them. He is getting the Masheter stang ready for another run down the quarter mile soon. Thanks alot guys I always enjoy reading about the "good old days!!!!"
These pics are of the cars as they sit right now in my friends private collection of Ford Drag race and muscle cars.

Your welcome guys, my friend just bleeds and lives for the old super stock wars way back when. He leaks blue oval info and has one heck of an collection of old super stock and Ford performance parts from years ago, I'm a tried and true Bowtie guy, but I learned to respect the oval stuff looking at his collection. were starting to get his 67 427 Fairlane together that he bought when he came home from Vietnam.
Heres a peak into the Stoudt car, he has not touched these cars since he parked them, as far as I know!!If theres interest I could maybe post more pics of these cars.

Probably Jerry Bennett, he had a 61 Dodge Pioneer wagon called Patches he and your Dad and he and Brian ran together many times at Paducah, Clarksville and Windy Hollow

Let me jump in here; alot of great cars talked about in this post so let me add my list:

-Jeff Lawrence GT/AA 351 Cleveland- I think he's been 8.90's
-Hartley&Saye, Roosevelt and Melvin Revels, Terrance Smith, and now Carrol Morris 71 Ford Mustang SS/I and now SS/IA
-Roosevelt and Melvin Revels 83 Ford Mustang SS/F and GT/B 351 Cleveland- When they built the 83 the GT classes weren't established for sticks so it ran in SS/F

I'm sure Bob Rice has photos of all of these cars.

Maybe the cleanest and well built mustang is Vic and Lois Krolls. Poke your head in and around that one sometime. Mark Buchanan built some neat parts for that car.

On the IHRA side of things Donnie Moore Sr. comes to mind. He had a mustang with instant action on the door. Not sure if this was related to the picture in the earlier post but I think the car was a 68ish 428 CJ, I think SS/FA (but senility is a powerful foe)! If memory serves me well Donnie had a big 1 on the window about 2 decades ago. The car was show quality and Donnie and his wife were awesome people and always present at all IHRA events. Don Jackson

Don,

He still has the car, one of the first bad Super Stock cars I ever saw as a kid. He also has a 428CJ coupe that is equally sharp. His son Donnie Jr. has a super cool rare "R" code car also. If I'm not mistaken the Instant Action car is one the original Carl Holbrook cars, don't quote me on that though. Donnie Jr. can confirm that.

Don senior owns "Instant Action" which was Carl Holbrooks. I own the "sister" car which was part of the "Instant Action" race team. Carl owned a lot of Cobra Jets in his time. Chris, his son has "Instant Action" on the front fenders of his 2010 Cobra Jet. He's just carrying on the tradition.

One of the nicest cars around, and people too. Hopefully Jr. will continue to race it. Here is a picture from last year at Darlington in September. See my thread LIVE from Darlington Pro-Am. I think.
