Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
In my short 41 years I've either raced, worked or spectated at approx 50 tracks I was raised in the south so I have been to all the major ones down there along with the outlaw tracks, and since working full time for NMCA, NMRA and Part time NHRA I've added several more from around the country in the process. The First time I seen fuel cars was at Blainey Drag strip in SC Don Garlits and Shirley were there match racing it was in the 70's something do not remember the date. Hooked ever since then.

Ron, the name of Hazelhurst was "Little Dixie Drag Strip" and the track NW of Jackson on Route 49 was "Jackson Sports Arena".
Ed, I've raced at Clarksville and have done quite well there. Anybody who has ever been there will never forget the "Loser's Bracket" which got bigger every round! Bear in mind there was another Clarksville track, (quarter-mile), only eight miles west of the current track, too. |
Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
It was an old air base. The track was concrete went down hill and up a hill. When I went, in the late late sixties, they called it Camp Wheeler outside of Macon, GA. I bet Woodro remembers...Frank

Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
Bret,
Thanks for the names of those two tracks as I had surely let their names slip by me. Almost seems like another lifetime ago. I found a picture not long ago of Albert Ray Dulaney in the Fugitive Chevy gasser from Jackson Sports Arena. I was only 8 or 9 when I visited that track and the very first pass I ever made at a dragstrip was at Little Dixie and that was shortly after it closed. The original racing surface is still there and is on property owned by a friend of mine. Although you can't tell there was a track there anymore from the road you can still see Little Dixie's racing surface from the air and tell it. The now defunct Riverside Raceway in Pearl, Ms. was my real start in drag racing. James Alford was the original builder/owner of it and lived a couple of doors down from my aunt. I remember being one of the first to actually make a pass down the track before it officially opened. I can still remember when they ran the pros at points meets there and weekly Stock/Superstock races early on. They tore down the track some years back as it was on 16th section land was replaced with Pearl High School. |

Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
I honestly thought Jeff Foster and Bob Brockemeyer would be in the "200 Club" by now. The only guys I know who've legitimately achieved that mark, (and whom I've verified), are Garlits, Ivo, Al Hanna and myself. I'm at 276 tracks right now but I'm sure there are a few more folks over two hundred and it wouldn't surpise me to see a few with higher counts than me.
Ron, the last time I was Hazelhurst, I got chased off by your buddy's cows! The track at Pearl is still somewhat intact and The Sports Arena dragstrip is now the main road into a subdivision. |
Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
Bret, I am sure Bob is over the 200 mark.

Did you ever make it to Magnolia Drag Strip in Ohio Hammer |
Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
We don't race much, but have made our way around our area - 16 tracks at which I have raced. MOST of these are within a 4 hour drive:
Indy, IN Muncie, IN Bunker Hill, IN ET Raceway, Salem, IN Avilla Dragway, IN (Closed 1995) Edgewater, Cincinatti, OH Tri-State, Cincinatti, OH National Trail, Columbus, OH Norwalk, OH Route 66, Joliet, IL Gateway, Madison, IL (Closed?) Beech Bend, Bowling Green, KY Mountain Park, Clay City, KY Bristol Dragway, TN Milan Dragway, MI US131, Martin, MI Visited: Heartland Park, Topeka, KS (Dad raced on PINKS!) |
Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
Jon, I made it to Magnolia in both its "original phase", (around 1978 or so), and its much nicer "new phase", (2007). It's a cool little joint!

Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
I have been at 64 Tracks in 25 states (that I can remember)
Raced at 62 of those, (didn't race at Pomona or Fremont) and was in the final round at 29 of those tracks lots of miles driven, thousands of dollars in entry fees, and a million great memories. |
Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
Hey Bret, talked with Ronnie Maggart today, he said he remembers you being
at Buffalo Valley ! |
Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
How many?...Not enough. Back in the early 70's, I grew up within 4 miles of both Minnesota Dragway's and Twin Cities Speedway. I drove to them both and never needed to go any further to race. I wanted to go to Amber Green once, but I couldn't find a trailer to borrow. Back then it was hard enough for a kid to borrrow some slicks. lol
Forward.....After a couple grandkids, I've raced or have been to all the Div 5 tracks except Bandimere. My dream someday is to be in the staging lanes at Indy. |

Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
My experience at Dauphin Island was made much more enjoyable by the track owner, FasCat. I had arrived in the pouring rain and there was nobody on the property so, being an inquisitive trespasser, I decided to drive in and check out the track. Unfortunately, I got stuck in a sand/mud bog down near the finish line and sank 'er up to the hubs. I got out, walked in the rain back to the Dauphin Island Parkway and was greeted by a gentleman on tractor headed right for me. I flagged him down but he had already witnessed my stupidity and, with a laugh, came over to pull me out! It turned out he was the owner and he was a genuininely good guy.
I actually left the track and headed south down the Parkway to the Island and grabbed a motel room and enjoyed a few days on the beach. The track has just recently become a subdivision and Dauphin Island itself has been split by multiple hurricanes. |

No, sir. Camp Wheeler Drag Strip was located in Bibb County. It ran from 1957 to 1965. Although it has been closed for many years, the track is still there, just off of Joe Tamplin Blvd. I have a Facebook page dedicated to Camp Wheeler Drag Strip that you might find interesting. My dad, Charlie Bush, used to race a white 60 Pontiac Ventura and a black 62 Impala, billed at the Bush Hester car at Camp Wheeler. Macon National Dragway is in Twiggs County. I believe it has also been know as Twiggs County Dragstrip. When I Googled it, I noticed that several of the results mentioned a 2011 schedule, so it sounds like they are still alive and well. From what I've heard, it is a 1/8 mile track. Camp Wheeler was a 1/4 mile track. Hope this helps. Sean Bush. |
Re: How many tracks have you raced at or been to ?
Hard to believe almost 80 posts and no one mentioned Ontario Motor Speedway(unless I missed it), a most impressive place, the first time I saw it in '74. R.I.P.
My list isn't long, by far, but I'm always looking to add onto it. (also year I first attended) Puyallup Raceway Park 1968 Seattle International Raceway 1970 Bremerton Raceway 1973 Mission Raceway (both versions) 1974, 2002 Ontario Motor Speedway 1974 Portland International Raceway 1975 Pomona Raceway 1978 Woodburn Dragstrip 1983 Byron Dragway 2001 Indianapolis Raceway Park 2003 Eagle Motorplex BC 2003 Firebird International Raceway 2005 Shelton Dragstrip 2006 Champion Raceway 2006 Maui Raceway Park* 2007 Spokane County Raceway 2009 Memphis Motorsports Park 2009 Firebird Raceway Id. 2011 * In Maui for a wedding, track was closed, but we found a hole in the fence and took a little walk inside just to check it out,, laid out like Puyallup was. Also have to mention The Ridge Motorsports Park, currently under construction, a multi use facility opening later this year. The road course has been poured and the dragstrip should be following shortly, hoping to have a T&T by mid May. The road course has some events scheduled for 2012.
