Or are you planning to wear out your expensive stocker running the bracket program?

After the pizz poor turn out at Palm Beach I wouldnt be surprised to see the sportsman cars of all classes were dropped at all of the freak shows.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NITRO JAM AND IHRA COMING TO TUCSON

The Tucson region has always had a rich tradition of great motorsport events. It is a community that has always demanded the best. And now Merles Southwestern International Raceway proudly announces that the best is coming March 25 and 26 as the 2011 Arizona Nitro Jam invades Tucson.
The 2011 North American Nitro Jam Tour will feature Top Fuel Dragsters, Prostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, Nitro Harleys, Fuel Altereds, and jet cars. And for the first time ever fans will witness the Cool Bus Wheelstander along with a Jet Semi as it takes on the legendary Grave Digger Monster Truck.
After weeks of meetings and voting from local racers, Southwestern International Raceway has confirmed that the facility will be sanctioned by the International Hot Rod Association. According to new owner, LJ Motorsports and CEO Bernie Longjohn the IHRA affiliation will insure additional racer friendly programs including the Summit Super Series.

And some people call the NHRA a circus? WOW! Whats with this? No wonder the car counts are low.

Re: Ihra tucson!

What on earth does that have to do with car counts? The "circus" doesn't interfere with the sportsman racing. Sportsman are on-track continuously from morning until about 5pm, then we're done for the day, then the next day, we run pretty much start to finish. I don't care if they have mud wrestling pandas after we're done racing. What difference does it make?

Re: Ihra tucson!

You must get about 10 time shots.

Michael Beard 02-01-2011 02:52 PM

Re: Ihra tucson!

No, that was Atlanta last year... :p At Palm Beach, we got two qualifying runs Friday, two qualifying runs and all of eliminations on Saturday. Bigger races are typically two qualifying runs and first round on the first day, then the rest of eliminations on the second day.

I say again... what does the "show" have to do with sportsman car counts?

Here's the deal Bob,

Per Bernie Longjohn of SIR, if they can get 24 S/SS racers to commit to the March race, then a combo race will be added to the above advertised event. Bernie is wanting to add our cars to the show, and there's 12 interested racers so far. Now that the track is IHRA sanctioned, next years event will probably have the regular categories and the contingency postings as well..... :)

I'd pay extra for the pandas.

Since it's only potentially a combo race, I don't think so.

After the bogus bracket car that got in the National Open @ speedworld I would hope that scales will be mandatory AT LEAST! And as a contributing sponsor to this feature I'm going to insist that scales as well as a thorough technical inspection be done. If we wnt this to suceed it has to be done as right as we can. Grade point hunters in bogus bracket cars need to stay out of this.
Still sitting on 12 confirmables. Come on guys let me know if this will work !

I don't have a dog in this fight but it seems that it's time to step-up.

The track's here, the money's here and the track operator's a very credible guy who's on your side. Looks like the ball is squarely in the racer's court.

Time to populate the classes and categories, guys.

Otherwise future complaints are gonna fall on deaf ears. And lacking viable competition, those West Coast dudes ain't gonna make things any better.

Jon, are you going to run stock at the NitroJam? If so contact Kenny Newsome at Discover Classics to get your name on the list.

I'm under the impression the Camaro in question has a legal stocker drivetrain. The wrap that includes the windows is definitely not allowed, and the Z-28 hood is a grey area to some (I don't think it's allowable). What seats are in the car?
Did anybody let tech know about these concerns? The owner perhaps? Or just wait to put the beef on the internet?
If racers don't step up, then they are part of the problem.

Oh btw Bob, now that I realized that you're the mystery smart *** writer from last year with regards to one of my buds, and are now turning your comments my way, I'll say this:

1. After these last 3yrs of having our cost of competition "enhanced" by the Glendora group, I'm glad that the west is starting to get competiton for the dollars we sportsman racers (I reserve that statement where you're concerned, since you post nothing to let anyone know what if anything you race, let alone who you are???), spend to enjoy our sport at this level.

2. I spoke with Bernie, and it's interesting to know that last year he asked Glendora for the VERY weekend that 'Vegas is going to enjoy for his former Oct. dated divisional...ironic that once Nitro Jam came into the picture and said the March date is great for them, that now it's a good date to hold a divisional...don't believe me? Call Bernie and ask him!!!

3. Given that I have an "expensive stocker", why would I "wear" it "out"? I'd rather invest in the expansion of some sorely needed competition out here, then to see the monopoly continue as it has for nearly two decades out west, and if I have to race in their bracket program to do so it's my choice, because IT'S MY CAR, & I CALL THE SHOTS!!!

I know it's hard with scheduling, the economy, and gass prices, but if you guys can go, GO! I don't think you will regret it. When IHRA was over here in D5 I went to all of them I could. They ran a great program, more bang for your buck, a fun atmosphere, and good payout. I wish they would have had the support over here. I don't get it myself. They didn't know what they were missing. Just try it you might like it!

Thanks Shultz, it's my hope (just as winds can suddenly swirl around from their beaten path back from whence they came), that other tracks out west will follow R.M.R. & S.I.R.'s lead and give the "blue collar" sanctioning body a try (by the way that quote came directly from "Skooter Peaco" (the VP of Racing Operations for IHRA), himself (THIS WEEK)! I then hope that some D5 tracks will re-try the "I", and then the whole western half of the country will be able to enjoy what the easterners have had the option to enjoy for decades...I like it already given that I could've not only registered my competition number (for), joined the Ohio group, and entered a national event (without needing a grade point no less, for the cost of a national event with Glendora's group!), but I'd (thanks to NHRA's enhancements of late), I'd be able to use the remaining $35 for racing fuel!!! Talk about bang for the buck, huh Shultz!!??? :)

If IHRA is so great, why are there low car counts? Just asking.

RJ Sledge 02-05-2011 12:43 PM

Re: Ihra tucson!

Quite a few of the NHRA racers have a stigma about racing IHRA for these reasons. They don't seem to be as professional as NHRA, very low payouts (but probably getting closer), majority of 1/8 tracks (but not in all areas and getting better), Crate Motor Classes/GT Stock Classes, questionable tear downs (pump and weigh for Record), and prior bad experiences in years past. These are just some of the things that keep the car counts down at IHRA events. But I will say that they do make you feel welcome, and want you to enjoy the IHRA experience. They try and overcome the obvious differences by being better hosts and there is nothing wrong with that.

Being you are only about 150 miles away I would suggest that you load up the Mustang and find out for yourself (IF they are going to have a S/SS Combo?). What else do you have to do at your age, you ain't getting any younger Pal. Give them a shot and you might become a regular. With all the BS coming down NHRA way, one needs to find an alternative place to race or sell your shix!

I plan on running some IHRA stuff this year as well as some NHRA races, as somebody said we ain't getting any younger and its about the only thrill I get these days.

Good Lord willing I will be coming out for the Nationals there this fall and then maybe on to Vegas, bout time for another Road Trip, Huh!!

The last I heard (from one of my racer buds out at the LODRS Chandler race), there's 16-17 seriously interested racers. However, Kenny (Aspen 7709) is the one to ask for more detailed info. Furthermore, I've been told (by both Bernie of S.I.R., and Skooter of I.H.R.A.), that if they can get even 16 cars it's a go, so I feel good about it happening next month!

mopacltd 02-19-2011 04:29 PM

Re: Ihra tucson!

That is good news, but it would be really great to see more participation from the local Stock/SuperStock community.
I will be at SIR as a spectator to show support.

Is not that what you guys asked for? More payout, IHRA & DP's & CJ's in their own class!

Kenny,

I don't know if you got my message at your shop, but I spoke with Bernie (at S.I.R.) today, and he said that I.H.R.A. needs that list you have by 03/15/11, or no go this year for the combo. I believe the call needs to go to either Bernie, or Skooter Peaco (at IHRA).

Per a chat I had with both Bernie & Skooter last week, I'm the only one who's turned in my name, competition number, and car class to Skooter (so far)...they're not asking for a pre -entry financial commitment (like they were for another class---Top Dragster if I recall correctly), but there's no mention on what the entry fee would be, scale or no scale, fuel check or no fuel check....? I hope this happens, but the 15th is closing in fast, so I don't know.....all who are still REALLY interested need to either call Bernie @ S.I.R. (520) 762-9700, Skooter Peaco @ IHRA (419) 660-4217, or Kenny Newsome @ (480) 949-8227. It's up to us.....

Thanks Kenny, as you see I added myself to your list too, but I'm disheartened that you haven't heard from another 4-5 racers around here (geez, Vic would be coming here from SoCal, so I don't get it...I can think of 2 others (and one other possibility), who live in the valley but are not on this list (the 2 were on the last list you had)...they must be headed 'Vegas way??? :(

Hi Kenny, thanks for your efforts anyway though....we both tried. However, you won't see me in Vegas (until likely November). Good Luck to you there though! :)

I do plan on racing soon after that race though, as I'll be Denver bound to grab my car (hopefully we'll get more cooperation with the nitrojam race in SLC in June?), to bring it back here to Az.

As far as I've heard it's a go, with the hope of better participation than last year....

OH MAN!!! I would have come down from Phoenix to see that race. I have been wanting to come down to SIR and check out the racing at that track for a wile. An IHRA Super Stock show would have gotten me down there.

Well Matt (and others here), we now have another opportunity to embrace IHRA in our classes out west! See my post with regards to Div. 7 and RMR (Rocky Mountain Raceway). Last time I checked, it was on page two of the threads list, and over 120 people have read it....
