Maybe a LITTLE soft, right? LOL |

I am familiar with your combo but you comment about my combo that you admittedly know nothing about! Hell, you can't even spell the name of the car! For the last time, it's VOLARE'. It's a Plymouth. With a 175/289 360. I have to weigh 104 lbs more than your soft combo. Oh and those Direct Connection valve covers sure make a lot of HP. You don't see where I race anywhere? Do you read Drag Race Central? Try it. I have 3 Divisionals under my belt so far this year, how many do you have? Now go fire up another fatty and polish that killer Neva of yours. See you in class. Actually no, Jim, I *am* talking about the 5.9L Dragpak motor.
Nice pics, Lew! Hey, is that a '77 Nova? :p LOL And Ed, it's more than a little soft... and that's *precisely* why I'm building it. I'm not here to blow smoke up anyone's rear. I can't afford to NOT build it. I'm building it to live, to footbrake it, to beat the snot out of it double-entered three times a week, and to put it in a bunch of winner's circles (mebbe?). I'm not out to prove how fast it can go (plenty of people can and will do that), but I am going to try to show how much of a winning, consistent, durable workhorse it is. If anyone's trying to hunt up the parts to build one, call Scott at Southland Speed. (see ad on the ClassRacer homepage) |

Re: Thanks Jeff!
Hey Mopar guys correct me if I'm wrong! This period in time was when I was becoming seriously interested in and learning about stockers.
In the say early 2000s the Aspen / Volare was the hot ticket. Qualifying at the top and setting records. But like all under factored combinations got hit with HP, became not so attractive for those that just wanted to go fast and there are no where near as many of them out there making noise. In other words they had their heyday as the controversial fast cars. Everyone has their day. So would agree that these days their HP rating may not be so soft. From what I hear one of the rockets with all the bells and whistles that has been sitting for years may make an appearance in Division 1 this season with multiple drivers and one fairly well known Duster driver may even swap feet! :D |

When I (Yes I said I) built mine i bought a back up engine from someone who had one and bought a body for $12.00.. no that is not a typo &12.00. Then 2 years of restoring and laboring to make it work watching Ken Etter & Steve Wann & Jerry Bennett get it hammered with hp. But i kept plugging away...that was 2000. Now 2 model & year changes later it is still 24 hp up from the start and lost .3 plus from a natural J to a H...and now come the ringers just to make it worse. Yea James I built it. From the ground up..
I will never forget my first national.. I was struggling and Ken Etter said to me...Hey that is a nice car. too bad the motor is a hunk of junk. I could run 10.90 in h with it.. I was in I @ the time running 12.20s .That hurt & i knew I was in for a long weekend.. But I am still here. Kenny Newsome 7709 h/sa |

I couldn't agree with you more! The MoPar F bodies had their day and now are over factored has beens, but don't tell Perrone! He's still back in the early 2000's and still thinks those taxi's are a threat to him! Jim |
Re: Thanks Jeff!
The Volare/Aspen 360's are has beens? There are 4 different 360 combos that can be run. I only take credit for getting HP on two of them. There are a few others responsible for the others. With that said I dont see why they cant run with any other combo out there, excluding the DP's and mustangs of course. Maybe James is right in calling them soft. Of course no where near as soft as his combo.

I know one thing if Jerry Bennett and George Widuch were still running those things they could run with any other cars except the new crate motor cars.

Many moons ago, we had two wagons with the 4x2 383. Both were fast. One was bought as a national record holder. Many Moons ago

Uncle already! Still quite an accomplishment the way it runs...and looks second to none.
Thanks for the names, some of which I need to do some research on. |
Re: Thanks Jeff!
I just talked to George BTW. he and Jerry are very happy with the way the car is running. George thinks he has a handle on it. Jim

Re: Thanks Jeff!
Add another to the list. My father Al and his partner Don Studley had a 62 383 wagon they raced in the late 70's to early 80's. Even held the E/SA record with it.

[QUOTE=Jim Wahl;247926]Nope. As I said, the only thing Direct Connection on my car are the valve covers!
. How much are those DC valve covers worth? At least a .10 huh. |

Re: Thanks Jeff!
James is a good guy
He has a very good engine builder and like me is very tired of the games that are being played I believe he runs the same combo as me You Mopar guys make very good power if you spend the money to do so One very respected engine builder told me he can make the most HP per CI with the 360 Mopar engine Now all that said don't get down on him he like many others makes this site rock and roll Wouldn't it be boring if we dint have people like him? It takes all types to make the whole......... |

Re: Thanks Jeff!
The 360 Magnum is still rated at 250 isn't it. Ever wonder why Jack McCormack ran those Dakotas? Haven't seen that family runnin' those trucks lately. I know Judy used to make #1 qualifier quite alot in that Dakota she raced. His daughter did really well in that CC Dakota 318.
Hope that Dakota RC I'm building does as well: Gave up on the 64 Dodge after looking at everything. I got a couple Pair of the R/T heads that Jack was selling, so I have that covered. And yea, as ya'll know, you can get lots of horsepower out of the 360: Nearly perfect rod ratio has way less friction. |
