Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
In 1966 I was only 7-years-old and my means of transportation was a Schwinn bicycle. A couple of years later, I was lucky enough to get a Schwinn "Apple Crate" for my birthday. Banana seat, sissy bar, shocks on front and back and a 5-speed shifter. Cool looking bike, but it was so darn heavy, you could hardly get any kind of wheelie out of it!

Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
In late 65 I traded in a 57 Ford 292 automatic on a 66 Mustang 289 stick. In late 67 I traded in the 66 for a 67 Mustang candy apple red fastback with a hi-po 289 stick. It was a special build that Ford did using micheline radials and Koni shocks with a heavy duty suspension. It was a great driving machine especially on those twisty mountain roads in Colorado.
If I could have just one of my former loves back it would be the 67. |
Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
I was the only girl in High School with a '64 GTO convertible. Knew then I was a born "motorhead". It was strange cause my Dad was a farmer and a car was just transportation to him. As soon as I graduated and started to work I traded for a new '71 Trans Am. Those were the days!

1968, 1955 Bel Air 2-door 1969, '69 Nova SS396/375 (wheeee!) |
Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
First car was 1963 4-door Tempest w/slant 4 and 3 in the floor. The independent rear axle kept coming out so my grandfather had it hauled off. I replaced it with a 4-door 57 Chevy 235 with 3 on the tree for $200. It just occured to me that these cars were not as old for there time as my daily driver (1994 Chevy Silverado) is compared to now. LOL

[QUOTE=Isaac Zane;250030]Jim, you weren't trying hard enough on the wheelie.. I had an "Orange Krate"! 4 telephone poles lenghts worth of wheelies and stoppies also!
Issac- From what I hear, those old Schwinn "Apple", "Orange" and "Lemon Krates" are worth a decent chunk of change nowadays. If we would have kept them until now, we might have enough money to finance a year's worth or racing. |
Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
First car I owned was a 65 Olds 442. Bought used in 1968. first new car was a 1969 SS 396 Camaro.

Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
Bought a '40 Ford with a nailhead Buick and stock running gear in 1963, my Dad made me sell it 'cause it wandered all over the road at speed.
Got a Valiant with a slant six and 4 speed next and then in 1965 got a Dodge 440 hdtp with the 426 street wedge which had no problem putting GTO's in their place....put it in my Grandmother's garage when I shipped out to RVN.....there I was lucky enough to get a pair of boots that actually fit! Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
The question was what were you driving in 1966 as a daily driver.....not what was your first car.....
My first car was a 1955 Buick that I got when I was about 15. I figured if I worked on a car it would help me learn to be a mechanic So I got this Buick for about $20. I think the trans was puked...... I started it up all the time and drove it from our front yard to the backyard on the grass leaving a trail of trans oil wherever I went. The battery wasn't charging so the local car expert and general all around cool guy said the generator must be bad. I tried to remove it and broke the end plate. I took it to the car guy and asked him if it could be welded to fix it and he laughed and said you can't weld that...it's pot metal.........So my start as a mechanic didnt go so well......I junked the Buick....... First car that I drove as a senior in high school was my fathers former car...a 1955 Pontiac....Not much of a car but better than walking....LOL |

Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
I had a 1967 Chevy II 100 series(2 door post) with a 327/275 motor. Also had a 4-speed, 12 bolt rear(3:55 posi), dual exhaust, heavy duty suspension, and a radio. It was purchased for around 2200 bucks. Car weighed 2860 and was maroon with black interior. Not a girl magnet, but I sure had alot of fun.

Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
First motorized vehicle was a 150 Vespa that started out blue but I got the local Dodge dealer to paint it 64 Cutlass yellow. I can't believe it's the second one mentioned already!
Then on to a 1959 Nash Metropolitan which I bought for $100 when I was 14 using my grass cuttting money. I learned to drive a stick in a few acres next to the house. It would actually bark off almost a car length going into second and I was young and stupid enough to actually race it at Pacific Dragway (AHRA XF/G) Then a 62 Corvair Monza Spyder with the turbo - could handle 260 Mustangs but not 289s. 67 Barracuda notchback with 273/235. Hated the styling but I bought it at the end of the year and the only fastbacks I could find were 2 barrels. 68 AMX, gold with Go Package. Beautiful car but was an embarrassing slug with the auto transmission and 2.87? positraction. That takes me up to 1970 and a 340 Duster. I couldn't afford much, so the only options were a radio, 4 speed, and sure grip. I had a very good friend who had an unbelievable string of cars. He was an only child of wealthy parents but didn't act like it. They bought him a 66 396/325 Chevelle when he was 15 and he had a neighbor kid drive him around. In 67 he stepped up to an XKE coupe. I'll never forget the day we all took turns with it at Ste Gen dragway. Poor car had its tongue hanging out. Dad made him cut back to a 68 Catalina but it was verdoro green which was a very hot color. Somehow he got a guy to swap his 69 Grand Prix SJ for it. The Grand Prix got traded for a 69 Corvette coupe, Monaco Orange with 427/435 and side exhausts. He traded that for a 69 SS396/375 Chevelle because his girlfriend said the Corvette was too hot (side pipes pumping heat up the door) and rode too rough. Finishing the decade, he bought the first 70 Z28 I ever saw and it had even had a Turbo 400 in it. That's the car where I found out about the turbo's override into second gear. Fond memories, but we were just dumb kids working hard and never knew how good we had it. |
Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
In the car seat in the back of Mom and Dad's 63 Chevy 327/250 4 speed. Well, there was that one time I was driving (and apparently speed shifting) and pulled it into neutral...down the driveway I went (backwards) with the drivers door open. The tree helped to stop me and wedged the car into the wall. New driver door, rear bumper and some quarter panel work. Dad was out of town and I kept telling Mom to get it fixed before Dad comes home. My first driving experience at about the age of 4.
Then into their 68 Malibu 327/325 4 speed bench seat. Never had the chance to drive this one (lol). |
Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
I was 27 in 1965, and had been watching the Pontiac spec sheets long enough to realize that if it had an automatic transmission, it had 10:1 compression, and even the 2bbl got a decent cam, so I bougtht a '56 Chieftan 2 dr. HT and swapped a '58 (370 c.i.) 2bbl motor into it. I paid $100 for the car and $75 for the motor, traded some parts for a 4bbl manifold and carb, and swapped the 3.08 third member for a 3.90 I had lying around from an earlier Olds project....
Took it to the strip, where it ran 90mph.... total investment, $175.00. Try that today... LOL! |

Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
Didn't get my license till 71, but in the late 60's I rode around my Mom's family's farm which was across the road from my family's house in a Model A cut down. That is a radiator, cowl, and driveline from a Model A , with a wood box bolted to the frame to sit on and just frame rails and rearend behind you. Basically take the hood ,fenders and back off a car and you have it. It was a blast, 100 acres of fields and dirt roads to drive on, drift around, and yes that is how i learned to power shift. Got drain oil from the local garage to keep it full of oil.
When I hit the road in 71, 64 Ranchero 6/auto. After a few months, bought a wrecked 65 falcon 289/4speed, put the entire drivetrain, front spindles, everything under the ranchero and man I was livin' large. |

Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
I was driving for Saint Peter in the 60s.. hopefully I get the job back in 60 years or so.
But if I was alive during the 60s I would have wanted a Chevy II, even though I'm a Ford guy I think they are my favorite body style ever. |

I wasn't alive in the 60's either, but in the late 60's my Mom and Dad were riding around in a white '62 Corvette. This photo from about 1969 shows the Vette with my Grandparents' '65 Dodge which is still in the family since new and will soon be driving or racing again.

Re: What was your daily driver in the mid 1960's
In 1963 I had a 55 Dodge then later updated it to a 60 Plymouth. Some old guy had it and he put dual Walker Continental Glass packs on it. How cool was that. Then a 61 Red and White Chevy convertable replaced the Plymouth. When I got back from Nam I bought a 68 GTX 2Dr hard top. Still drive that one today.
