Here's a couple of pics of Parrish driving the '65 and '66 Chevelle wagons. Don't recall ever seeing the "Revenge" Chevy II wagon.

My vote goes to Jack Mullins, did a lot with very little. How about in stock, Al Provoast Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame with his Air Lift Heavy Hauler Buick Estate Wagon N/SA.

Love Mark Longo's Chevy II! But we can't forget the '57 Wagon of my good friend the late "Ohio Ollie" Dean. Still looking for picture. He was running his wagon before wagons were cool and it was good looking and fast. RIP Ollie - we miss ya!

Bob,
I think the 66 was either Revenge III or Revenge IV, and probably the latter. Tucker drove that car regularly for a few years both at the local combo at "The Hill" and at the division races. When he wasn't driving it, he drove Harry Vineyard's white 69 Chevelle 427/425, Harry had a 4 speed set up for that car, and they ran A/S with it.

Blaney was the hottest, wheather wise, we ever raced and the late night tear downs were done on the dragstrip....

Not allowed to race on sunday so it was all done in one day. This was when we ran from Top Fuel on down at points meets. I was working the scales and fuel check during eliminations and Ronnie was going rounds. Think this was when we ran off the records so any advantage was big. Around the qfinals Ronnie asked if we were tearing down winners and runner up or just winner. I said likely just winners because it was getting late. After he won the semis he asked again. Same answer. He then told me the other car in the final was big in the motor but he woudnt win so he didn't have to tear down. Ronnie said he would prove the other car was cheating by leaving in 3rd, going back to 1st and the other car would not pass him. Sure enough the other car didn't pass Ronnie and was really shocked when he came by the scales and was told we were tearing down winner and runner-up. First the RU said okay then argued about it. Buster finally gor involved and the RU never did tear down so he was banned for 1 year.

After reading all of these post and seeing the pictures, I dont see how one car can be picked as the best. There are so many that stand out and drivers that made a history for them as well. I think they are all great and winners in my book.

Chuck Koppiens SS/LA-MA 65 Chevelle wagon was the best in our area.

You really can't . I think Mullins' Pontiac might have been the winning-est but not sure about that either.
How about Herman Chapman's 402 Chevelle? Any pics?

With all the "modernizing" of super stock , GT classes, modern superstock cars, etc. it takes a REAL man comfortable in his masculinity to compete in a (grannys grocery getter) wagon! Kudos to you competetors driving one! The wagons always catch my eye. In the past I have seen a fairlane wagon in B/S at Bristol with a 427 stick, Noah Andersons max wedge (flying wedge)cross ram belvedere running IHRA B/SA points races in the early 80's, Steve McCrearys 57 chevy dog gone wagon in IHRA SS/J, Randal Campbell's 194ci nova stocker wagon, Mike Boyles 57 2 door wagon IHRA SS/I, And David Jacksons 58 2 door yeoman wagon IHRA SS/JA sled. Where did they all go? One of the prettiest still competing is the Stubenville Fruit 283 stick SS car competing in NHRA. I for one miss seeing these grocery getters and will always walk all the way across the pits to look at one! Don Jackson

I don't remember what the weight break was for SS/R but it's likely that he was running a 283 at 220 horsepower? Jimmy ran that motor combination for a lot of years. It seems to me that a '66 Impala with a 220 horsepower also ran SS/R at one time so the weight would just about even out. I'm sure that someone out there knows for sure.

I believe in 1978 the Classification for the Chevelle wagon was "R". I think they consolidated things for 1979 and it became an "N". It could have been 77/78, but in that time period. That's the way it worked for my '65 Chevelle Wagon.

There is so many great wagon SS & Stockers that have raced since day one but i would have to say if i was voting, it would have to be the Jack Mullins Pontiac Wagon in NHRA and Mike Boyles Charlie Brown Wagon in IHRA.
Thats my 2 cents on this!

That would have been Dwight Cox out of Stuttgart Ark.
He won SS at Indy one year with that car.

Re: Best Super Stock Station Wagon/All Time?

I just found my 1976 NHRA Rulebook. It shows the weight break at 15.00 to 15.99 for "R". I'm pretty sure that I ran "R" at Indy in '78 and "N" in '79.

I believe between '78 & '79 or thereabouts, they combined the six half-pound weight breaks between "I" & "N" (inclusive) to make the current one pound classes of I, J, & K. Everything else moved up at that time so the '65 Chevelle Wagons became "N" cars instead of "R"s. The 283 has been moved up, down, and around on HP from 220 to 235 in those cars, so who knows what they weighed at any given time.

I'm pretty sure that the class change took effect at the beginning of the 78 season.

Re: Best Super Stock Station Wagon/All Time?

I'm pretty sure Jimmy's wagon says SS/Q on it .That would be like the Cieri Bros. in 72-74
(15#) If the wagon was pre the 2dr HT, that would be in the same era.
Jimmy Parker could probably tell us about this.

I ran at 16 # in 73-74 with the Bel Air 4 dr (SS/R).
Later , I remember some 4drs. in SS/T and SS/TA ,so they got moved down a letter for some reason.

Mark Yacavone 07-10-2011 02:57 AM

Re: Best Super Stock Station Wagon/All Time?

I remember now, I think. There was a 12.5 class in S/S (SS/N) Remember Lingenfelter's conv. ? They did away with it for some reason (maybe 75?) and it moved everybody up one letter, below it.

It is a Q Mark but it wouldn’t it have to be '74 or later due to the 2018 permanent number?Bob Rice

Re: Best Super Stock Station Wagon/All Time?

If I remember it, I'll ask Mr. Bridges, next time I talk to him. And I'm fairly sure the wagon came after the two door hardtop.
