This morning the weather forecast was not looking too good. Maybe even up to 5 inches of rain in spotty areas. Hopefully this won't be one of the spots.

Patsy, watch out for that red mud!! It's really sticky stuff.

Good luck,

Well it is an overcast morning here in OK. It is not calling for rain today, so hopefully we will get our 2 runs in. There has been a steady stream of rigs coming in all morning. Super Street is first out and they should be calling them up shortly.

Chuck, hopefully we won't be getting into any of that red mud! (But I brought an extra pair of shoes, just in case!)

Gary, come over and introduce yourself when we get to Phoenix!

More later.

Live Timing

I see Thunder Valley is listed on the live timing site but is showing off line. If someone is near the tower, tell them to turn it on as us arm chair drag racers are intrested in watching it. Thanks for the great reporting and we'll see you in Vegas.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Only 27 stockers made the first run this morning. There was a very strong cross-wind blowing. I will get the temp, etc. in a bit. Super Stock is in the lanes now.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Just made our 2nd and last run for the day. Density altitude was 2400' the first run and 2600' on that one. There are now 33 stockers. We hooked really well both runs. They sprayed the full length of the track on both sides before stock made their 2nd run. They have been having some timing issues on the track also. Our 60' and 330' were the same.

Hey Bob Unkefer!! You are doing a great job of announcing as per usual! Come by for a drink after work! We have most anything you would like. Even "Sex at the Racetrack" again. They were good yesterday when it was hot out here!

Well we are going to have some lunch and some of those great track french fries that Bob keeps talking about. Then I will go out and get a few more pics.

More later.

Go to "Drag News", and click "30 Latest", and you'll see the results.

Same under the NHRA section, need to go to "30 Latest" to see the qualifying sheets for the Keystone Nat'ls.

I received this e-mail from Kay at 1320go.com.

There's a hardware failure and we've been working with folks at the track and the Division 4 people to try to come up with an alternative. We'll keep you informed if the situation changes.

Thanks for your patience.

Made the announcement earlier...... 1st round of EVERY category will be contested here tomorrow, possibly 2nd round in some categories as well... all due to the forecast for tomorrow night & Sunday.

Everyone gets one hit in the morning & then we go racing, even the alcohol cars are only getting 2 Q sessions before their 1st rd.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

It turned out to be a great day here at the track! It was windy all day, but only about 83. We start out in the morning with Super Street at 9 with time trials, then stock. As Bob said, everyone gets a time trial, then they are going to try to run 1st round of everything tomorrow. Rain is not looking on getting here til 5 or so on Sat. afternoon, then it doesn't look too good for early on Sun. But hopefully we will get the race in.

It was a pleasure seeing Bob Unkefer again and enjoying an adult beverage with him this afternoon. He always has great stories. Also enjoyed talking with Ray Buckner and Jerry Davis. Jerry made some spaghetti sauce that they were having for supper tonight. I'll have to find out tomorrow how it turned out!

More tomorrow!

Cotten!!! A whole field of it!

And this was our first casualty of the trip! The tread came off the trailer tire and blew out. We didn't know it when it happened. A nice guy passed us and kept pointing. He pulled over when we did and came back and said he thought our trailer was on fire! Thank goodness it was only the tire! So by the time Larry changed the tire and then we stopped in Springfield, MO and bought 2 more (just in case), we lost a couple of hours today.

Hopefully tomorrow will go better and I will get some shots at the racetrack for you.

Oh, we passed a little convenience store that it looks like Bo Kenney might own. It was called the "Kum and Go"!

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Bernie,
The plan is to run as MANY rounds of eliminations today as possible. There are always some cars that come in Friday night/Saturday morning and todays ONE session will give them a hit at the track, only 1 and then we get after it.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Well it is a beautiful morning here in Noble. The rain is still west of us and hopefully will stay away until tonight. A few cars have come in overnight, so they will get their 1st run today along with everyone else. The temp is 71 now and the air is about 300' better than yesterday. Super Street and Stock have already been called up and we are starting earlier than scheduled. We run 1st round very quickly this morning since the car count is so low.

More later!

Sprinkled on us just as I came out of the water box for today's SS Q1/Q-only. Shut us off for maybe two minutes. It stopped so we fired them back up and ran. Still windy as heck. Round 1 of Stock is done. Super Gas just ran first pair. Just called Top Dragster to the lanes.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Well we made it thru the 1st round. We had a broke single. Larry had a .009 light, so we have started out our trip very well. As Ed said, it sprinkled just a little, but the sun is shining and they are moving everything along quickly. Hopefully we will get in a couple of more rounds today. I think they are going to run until it starts raining. I am going to try and get a few more pics this afternoon.

Thanks, Mike. Yeah, we made it thru the 2nd round. It has just started raining here. I think they finished up the 2nd round of Super Stock, too. We are on hold for the moment. The radar doesn't look good right now. I made a few pics that I will post in a while.

Here is the big tower here at Thunder Valley

I've spent a lot of hours in that "big" tower in recent years. :)

I've watched it rain quite a bit a few times. One year Bob Frey was there doing a piece for his Sportsman show at the divisional event, and there was a three hour rain delay. That was the most entertaining rain delay I've ever experienced! Bob did three straight hours of stand-up comedy. Not only is he one of the best drag racing announcers in the history of the sport, he's also one of the funniest people I've ever met.

I've seen racing delayed due to wind at Thunder Valley. I've seen that happen a few times at the Texas Motorplex too. The wind sure can blow in Texas and Oklahoma!

I was there the night Shelley Howard destroyed her TAD (and a gate) at a turnoff in the shutdown area. That was a very scary crash, but she walked away from it unhurt.

Heaven help you if race day activities end at the same time as a Sooner home football game ends. That little 4-mile stretch of highway 9 to I-35 can take 45 minutes to traverse when it is full of Sooner football fans.

I happen to really like the smaller drag strips like Thunder Valley. The experience, at least for me, is more intimate and friendly than it is at most larger (national event) tracks. Way too many of the smaller tracks have been closing in recent years, and that is very troubling for both racers and fans. When I see decent car counts at smaller tracks for divisional events, I can only smile. You folks really are the backbone of this sport. Your continued participation and support is greatly appreciated!
