Internet photo.
Never noticed it myself. Looking at the letter placement and lace pattern, still not sure. |

I love then too, it was a day when you and the painter would figure out the paint scheme....my painter was called "Fig", never knew his real name. I'm not wild about wraps but those paint jobs back then but today they would be $20,000.00 plus. JimR |
Re: Leaf,Lace,Scallops and Cobwebs.
Lots of Mind altering drugs and experimenting going on back than. I kinda remember them I start getting flash backs looking at those paint jobs stealing my grandmothers table clothes. We even did suede stuff

Two "current" day paint jobs I think are noteworthy. I told Mike at Indy that I thought it was one of the best I had seen in years, he said, he would pass it along to his paint guy. I hope the Mule isn't a wrap, it sure is colorful.

When we returned, the air was thick and it wasn't from overspray. Unlike the masters of the time like Oop, Circus, and Jim Hooker it seems like the local guys all bounced around quite a bit. The painter I mentioned earlier had been a bartender before his paint career and later became a minister. We quickly learned though the guy was good he absolutely didn't know when to quit. After he ruined a friends cars with way too many "fish scales" we learned to stay close and make him put down the gun when the time was right. Along with lace and scallops, he was also later known for "mountains". Like fish scales, he used a cut piece of cardboard to spray the outline. I remember a friend paying big bucks for "ribbons" on his B/HR Corvette in 71 or so. I didn't notice many of those in the photos so far. Gold leaf lettering was admired and pricy, but I remember when ChromaGlo was released as an alternative. It was the first "stick on" graphics I can remember. I was told years later by a professional drag racing photographer that the one thing you could do to insure your car would NEVER get photographed was to use leaf or other shiny lettering as it just wouldn't show up well in the photo. |

I'd forgotten to mention "bubbles". I think they used very thin paint at high pressure for those. |

This was a 54 Crown Vic given to me when I was 17. I already had 2 cars and my folks would not let me have another. My boss had to move right away and gave the car to me. It was stripped of interior and drive train. I kept it at a friends(so called) house who later said he had to move it and traded it for a motor. If I would have been notified I would have moved it, oh well. Wish I had it today, would have been a great Nostalgia car. The head lights and tail lights were frenched and the paint was great for the day, about 1975.

Re: Leaf,Lace,Scallops and Cobwebs.
"FREAK DROPS"
Thin (water consistancy) paint, shot through an airbrush. Put some paint in a small area and then using just the air, push the paint out from the middle. You could get something similar to a sunburst or really any shape you could push out with the air. Searching the web for an example and just can't find one. |

Now your talkin!!! I look closer at the Camaro I posted and I think someone put a circle up and painted around it. It looked similar, but not like what you have here. Neat, very neat.

Cobweb up close.
Straight lacquer over basecoat(can use acrylic enamel or urethane) play with pressure till you get what you want for a pattern, let it evaporate and clearcoat. http://www.kustomrides.com/images/D/CobwebRED.jpg I never shot it this heavy (only did a couple of dirt bikes) but still a good example. |
