Re: Bill "da Grump" Jenkins Passed away today
I read an interview with Grumpy years ago. Don't remember where.
What I do remember was when asked how, when building a car, did he decide if the part was too heavy. To the best of my memory the answer was, "I throw it into the air. If it comes back down and the car will run without it, it's too heavy." :) Two Toys in Tow. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2670/3...f71eb97ae7.jpg |

The man on the left with Grumpy, Ronnie, and Buddy is Jim Henderson. Jim was tech inspector at Pittsburgh International Dragway where the photo was taken. Jim still races his J/S Chevelle locally at the IHRA and NMTRA races. Jim was fortunate enough to get all 3 to sign the photo for him and brings it to all of our P.I.D. reunions. Now as to what was being discussed, I will have to get back to you on that! I thank Mr. Truby every time I see him for all of the great drag photos that he took. He is the link between my generation (32) and the good old days of stock / super stock racing. Carl Schodde Jr. |

Hey mcink,
Did Grumpy have his Monza PS that Larry Lombardo was driving for him by then or was he in Grumpy's Camaro Z/28 PS, but judging by the year you say of the pics it probably was the Camaro Z/28...would you happen to have any more pics of the car at Thunder Valley Dragway. http://www.v8monza.com/album/images/...enkins-045.jpg . |

Note that even back then, on the January 1968 cover of the magazine someone was asking...What's wrong with drag racing?
Would love to read that article to see the issues of the time. |

I don't see the building that would show up in photos taken in this direction though....Across the street was an Air Force base...and the building was part of it...so I'm not sure? One thing I AM sure of...is that I've got one of those Chevrolet racing jackets worn by the fellow in the background...think I got it from Berger Chevrolet...about that time. I'll be DAMNED if it fits me today....HA HA HA!!!!! |

My guess on the guy in the driving suit behind Grump is Jack Trost. Jack had an SRD P/S Vega. The Trost family had a body shop near Malvern that did most of the paint work for Jenkins and always did a great job in a short amount of time. They also did some work on Trans Am Camaros for a guy named Roger something from that area. Lots of experience with "thin" metal. |

Re: Bill "da Grump" Jenkins photo tribute
I found this bit of info from April 1975. Bill Jenkins and his Pro Stock Vega won a match race at Maple Grove Raceway against Barry Setzers Funny Car, driven by Tommy Grove. Jenkins car received a 2.2 second head start and defeated Groves 6.60 with a 8.73 at 159.10 mph.
later the same month Jenkins put 2 cars up for sale. 1975 Vega, turnkey with all the trick parts for $26,500. he also asked $16,000 for his 1973 Vega, also turnkey. FYI, the NHRA National reconrds as of January 1975 were: Pro Stock Bob Glidden 8.81/154.90, AA/FC Dale Pulde 6.16/233.76, and T/F Don Gatlits 5.78/247.76 Rod in AZ |
