Bad news from Stock round 2 - the boss blew up -- as I was pulling in the bleach box I looked up to see Ken putting out huge smoke from both sides and pull over next to the wall - quite an explosion - looks like the crank just snapped .

More bad news - Ken told me my pay was cut in half effective today ......least he still has his sense of humor - and he did ask what his light was ( thats from hanging around the Biondo family ) .

That looks about as ugly as it gets and being a FE guy I'm really sorry to see it. I am curious as to what brand crank that is and why all the Mallory on the front counter weight. Usually the 428 get's weight on the back for an internal balance.

What a race between me and my brother Barry. The correct times were 11.02 for Barry and 11.15 for me. It was Barrys first race back in some time and the 3rd pass on the corvette. I would not want to run him again. That car is super fast and he will not be late a 2cnd time.. Thanks to all who made the race a special one. Gary Parker

Thanks nickh, I will be okay, I would rather have the beer right now.

Dale, the brand is ford, that's all we can use. I can't help you with the Mallory, I don't do cranks. Hopefully NHRA will let us use aftermarket cranks. It would be nice not have to go through this again.

Garrett, I was thinking that myself. It could have been ugly. Very little oil came out. The crank broke just as I shifted into second gear and the balancer smashed into the water pump neck and blew water over the headers. The oil came out when I lifted and it sloshed to the front, I shut off about 100 ft out.The oil pan had no holes. Its funny, the first two rods are still on where the crank broke and the engine spins fine. The front part of the crank ripped the front main right off the block. The main cap did not look bad, but the block is trash. There is also a 4 inch square hole on the right side of the block above the pan rail. I have been running 428's for over 25 years and never seen a crank come apart like this.

Sorry folks for the lack of reports, I think Jack will have a more info later tonight.

As always we appreciate the reports and especially all the pictures. A darn shame to see a motor destroyed but good to know that no one was physically injured and the car came to a safe stop upright.

Jack,
The guy in the hospital scrubs canvassed the whole bleacher area next to the tower on friday.... asked everyone to produce entry ticket stubs. Saturday, he came by and said......anyone without a wrist band has to leave. He also stated no one allowed in staging lanes without a wrist band...... not sure the rhyme or reason but....... never had that happen before. Oh well, great action Friday and Saturday. My friends and I enjoyed ourselves as usual.

Thanks for the info Ken. I asked because the crank looks a lighter color than Ford and it's seldom you see a factory crank break. I have heard a lot of stories of Eagles coming apart at the same spot but didn't put my brain in gear about you being in Stock so no insinuation intended. An old story I heard was this is a result of bad harmonics but no proof one way or the other. Personally, I'd rather have a Factory Ford crank than something offshore. I hope you can re-group before too long.

He also asked me and another NHRA official to leave the area, and we were both wearing our NHRA Div shirts....no wristbands. I went back to my RV and got my restricted area hardcard after that. I'm not sure if he was joking with us or not.

Rest assure he wasn't joking ..........He was doing his job but enjoying it way too much - and pushing past the limits .He kind of reminded me of the janitor in high school who caught us smoking in the boys room ..................I can still hear his keys jingling ! ! !

In the past , I have'nt had too high an opinion of the track prep or the timing system at Lebanon Valley.
I must say this year the track was prepped very well ,especially considering the heat. ...And the bugs seem to finally be gone from the PortaTree timing system.
My car had identical numbers from both lanes, Something I've never had there in past years.
Also a big thank you to Bob and Dave for removing the black foam blocks at the end of the track and putting in some nice new red ones so we could find the finishline !

The first time I ran at LV, I had no idea where the finish line was.

on the brighter side of LV event this might be some history triva in the makings but Byron Worner had 3 .000 RT's during elimintions (Rd 1, 2 & 4), simply wow, i dont even think the Bracket/SS/Stock ace Michael Beard has done that one, but i might be wrong.
Anyhow great job Byron!

Track prep no problem..The TREE IS TOO SHORT!
Isnt there a required height? Also got a weird time slip.2st rd I go 11 thou under killing 13 + mph..Sorry cant be . I would have flat spotted my front tires ..Many racers had weird time slips..

Funny ain't it -- same thing happened to me - killed more than 8 mph and still ran out - round 3 .Thought I was dialed very hard ........

Jack if you drop the nose on your Firebird, the front section can and will trip the lights and your going to get a faster ET........The distance from the wheel to where the front nose might hit the beams....

Happened to me at least once in my Friebird.....

Yes , I'm aware that can happen - but more than 8mph killed - the nose is out front but not that far ........And since I've had this car since 1996 it would have happened many times before this .

Re: Live from Lebanon Valley-NHRA Lucas Oil Series 2012

Yes I agree that doesn't make sense......You are right there....

I did not realize that was the car you had in 1996.......

Watching you go 11.2's and faster as an H/SA was one of the reasons I sold the car I had back then..... A '69 Nova that I bought form Lloyd Mackay.....I figured the old cars were done....

Re: Live from Lebanon Valley-NHRA Lucas Oil Series 2012

ET & MPH do not tell the entire tale. Post all of the incrementals from the quick run, and a couple other complete representative all-out runs.

Typically, I find that 2 mph is about .01, so you probably got rid of .04. Didn't I read somewhere that there had been a weather shift and a tailwind had come up? It's very easy for a car to move that much in the 1/4-mile. Now, if all of your incrementals are adding up the same, and then it shows a pick up of .05 just in the last 320', then you may have something. Study the incrementals, split times, and speeds.

Also, if you have an uncharacteristically late reaction time, and all of your incrementals come up way fast, it's often a symptom of a stage beam hanging.

Only one driver sent me any information about a "weird run". So everyone is satisfied to just chalk up an errant run as "weird" without studying the how's and why's? The one I was sent turned out to be not in error. If something is legitimately a jacked up run, you should be able to see conclusive proof of that, and likewise, it will be a useful learning tool if it turns out to be a 'real' run, and you just need to figure out *why* it did what it did.

Anyone can PM me if they do not want to discuss runs publicly.

I'm a guest instructor on www.ThisIsBracketRacing.com. Bogacki has some excellent articles on *reading* timeslips (not just "looking" at them) ;) We're here to help. Invest in yourself.
