Im not so sure with that. If you can afford to live on Stanton Island or the sea side areas one would think they could afford to get out and go someplace. Im sure there would have been lots of people living farther away that would have helped and taken in people. We do that here in Florida when people need help. I understand why some do not get out but this was a major monster storm that wasnt going away. How high is Stanton Island above sea level anyway. Do the math on 13+ ft above high tide waves. Its an Island with a low marshy areas. Just the ferry and lots of boats everywhere to get off as far as I know. Building right on the beaches in Nj and the Carolinas. When something hits like this its GONE. Water is the strongest force in nature. People trying to get to work a day or two later after the storm hit is also insane. No transportation. Lower Manhatten is almost as bad as New Orleans and is surrounded by water with no place to go..... no wonder the subways were flooded...they are UNDERGROUND !

Thanks Charlie A. . I know where your coming from and think of Katrina and that drives me foward. Lots of work to be done here and I am much more lucky than others.

just got my internet today at 2:00 pm. Still no power. maybe tomarrow we will have power.
in Fairfield CT, 5 homes washed into the Long island Sound. Many homes moved off foundations and sides of homes gone.Lots of damage in CT.

Glad to see the army and guard has finally shown up with equipment. Hope they can clear a place for some shelter for people left with no place to go or hide from the storm coming now. Fema trailer disaster from Katrina had them in arkansas? months AFTER needed.

Those FEMA mobile homes went to Arkansas for storage because they were not built to Mississippi wind code requirements to be sent to the Coast. Waste of MILLIONS of our tax dollars and much needed shelter rotted away in Arkansas.

If anyone in NJ or New York needs a place to temporarly store their race car trailer or motorhome due to Sandy ,I have space for several at the old dealership lot in Allentown,PA.
Not a fenced lot but paved and one block from Police station.

Spent the last 48 hours moving heavy equipment in and out of disaster areas all over Long Island. Payloaders and excavators are at a premium. Cats , Komatsus , Kawasakis ----small to the largest are in and out of dealers 24 hrs a day. Some places are so inaccesible that we are breaking down the lowboys on major roadways and the operators are clearing their way to the jobsites sometimes over a mile away. The devastation on the south shore is incredible. If you have ever heard of Jones Beach, It will not accesible to the public in the summer of 2013. It is going to take billions to even begin to put Long Island and surrounding areas back together. AND TIME-----LOTS OF TIME !

When huricane Wilma came through down here in Florida, FEMA offered to pay for a generator if you were out of power for 5 days I believe. I got one and my neighbor also got one, we got paid around $600. each towards the generators. It didn't matter that the generator was only $500. you got $600. as long as you had a receipt. I know that you probably can't get a generator now, but everone should look into getting one when they do come available. Check with FEMA and see if they still reimburse for generators. It was a really good deal.

There are lots of people out here have yet to see a FEMA representative. It seems, in some areas, that FEMA has set up offices for claims. When your neighborhood is trashed and your car floated down the street and has a boat on top it and you have no power and no phone or internet ,how are these people going to find FEMA. Maybe the reps should put on the boots a start walking the neighborhoods and meeting the people.:eek:

What a mess here on south shore long island. miles long gas lines, glad I don't need any yet. My area looks clean but many streets no electric still. have a few friends moving in tomorrow.
They would not leave their homes and lost their belongings and cars. There are so many totalled cars, is pathetic. people do not care. they let everything go. I did not hear of anyone moving stuff much before thestorm. Shame so many new and used cars ruined.
Oh, and the layoffs started today, Long Island is going to have a biggg pile of new unemplyment people filing, ask me how I know. Never mind don't. Car industry is in the tank. New car sales thru the roof, till they run out. Service dept, done for now. noone can drive anywhere. We were caught with our shorts down as a whole here. We learn from our mistakes. hopefully. good luck tomorrow all w the noreaster. should be a mess.

Had the pleasure of meeting a few of these guys when I was trying to get to my marina to assess the damage to my boat, well the boat is a total loss, it's out about 1/4 mile from the jetty, I guess some of my problems are over !!! THANKS FOR THE HELP and patience/tolerance expressed.

I'm Baaaaaaaaack.
After losing power on Sun. night I resorted to my 3,500 watt generator to power our fridge and provide some light in the house.Luckily I have an indoor propane heater that kept the living room a nice toasty 71 degrees.Did have to go out once for gas (a bit of a hassle).My son in law in Pa sent me 7 gals. by way of his brother and my neighbor loaned me a 20lb tank of propane.Got a refill and returned it to him today.Our power came back this past Sun. night around 8PM.Thankfully we had no property damage but others in the area weren 't so lucky.Tree and water damage.My brother has a house on a small island at the shore on the bayside (Chadwick Island).We'll be going there on Friday if possible to reclaim some things he wants to remove.
This was a devastating storm,especially on Staten Island.Contrary to what Terry said most of the people who sustained damage (and loss of life) weren't summer beach types with big bucks.The island beach area has been and is populated by every day working people and many retired people.
The Jersey shore will feel the effects (lost revenue for busnisses and the state) for years to come.
I'm thankful I came through this unscathed but my sympathies go out to those who lost homes,businesses and some their lives to this storm.

Good morning. Home for my first day of being unemployed. The Nor Easter is on its way. Windy morning here for south shore long island. stores are packed by my house already.
Hopefully this one does not do so much damage so I can get rehired back at my job, as they said. This could put it over the edge here tho for some. I send my prayers to all those who have lost something or someone thru this tragedy we are in, and will be back in a few hours if this storm hits. Counting my blessings, believe me.
