Jim, I will try to do that!

Some notes from the race:

Robbie Shaw got the wheelie award this morning. I think he scraped the bumper. I will try to find where he is pitted and see later.

John Livingston withdrew and now Painter is driving his car.

Jeff Adkinson broke something on the line this morning. Don't know if it is fixable by first round or not.

Brad Plourd broke something yesterday and looks like he has withdrawn also.

The track seemed to be hooking better today.

Did the rules change?
If somebody is teched in as the driver and drove a car at an event it can't be driven by anybody else at the event used to be the rule!?

Well it was interesting first round. Our car went from a 1.36 60' to a 1.49 and it was all over but the shouting! Cooter just came over and asked if we were another victim of the bald spots. Larry said to tell ya'll that, if you aren't already here, unless they do something about the track, don't waste your money coming for Race # 2. Most of the losses first round was due first to someone spinning them up. And then the wind kept coming and going, so if it died down, you might have broken out. One person who is probably kicking himself right now is Gale Pinkston. He was running Bud Rowe and something happened to Bud--probably spun em and Bud was not even half track and Gale broke out by .02. Never looked up, I guess.

Oh, and I don't think Brad Plourd is even here. Either someone else is driving his car or one that looks a whole lot like it!

I would try B/SA for the second race and put the weight back in.Is this the first race that you ran at the CC/SA weight?

Div2 does have a track that hooks, South Ga. Motorsports crew did a great the first race of the year keeping the track working. The track crew stayed on top of the bald spots by being proactive. They sprayed, dusted, and drug the track as needed.

The Atlanta track just needs to follow a proven biscuit recipe for track preparation. If Atlanta needs a recipe please contact Bill "Red Man" Floyd, or Pat Joffrion.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

Still mad about lack of track prep: so is # 3 B/SA Corvette, Slate missed his dial by .24, I was off .13 in 60', Glazener off his dial by .37, Kight off by .14, Wood COPO off .32. Super stock did not do much better gt/ ga Taylor blew tires off. General opinion is "if they won't fix the track we will not be back".

Looks to me If the crew does not get the starting line under control, there will be plenty of places to park in the future.

As they say "screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me"

I know I got screwed today by poor track prep, please don't make me say shame on me!

Everyone hear paid to race on a quality track, today everyone got short changed!!!!

Just wondering if this has been a problem in the past, seems to be a really low car count? Hope you guys have better conditions for the second race.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

I believe some of the starting line problems could be helped by a schedule adjustment and an understanding of what each category car needs to make a successful run. Stock is the only class that has a tire rule. Let the stockers go first, then follow Super Comp or Top Dragster in the rotation. The "long" cars put rubber down on the track, reducing the time to repair the bald spots.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

Well it is another beautiful day here in Commerce, GA! It started out at 46 degrees this morning, but we are up to 57 now going up to a high of 79 this afternoon. A few more cars have come in overnight to run Race 2 of the double points race. Hopefully the starting line crew will get the track in shape today for time trials and again tomorrow for eliminations.

We had a great time last night watching eliminations and cheering on all our friends that were still in racing. They were still in but we were watching enhanced by alcohol so I am sure we were having just as good a time as they were. I did discover that Absolute bottles do not hold up very well whenever they come in contact with the granite countertop. And it was a brand new bottle! I had to change clothes before I went back out to watch. My shoes and socks were even soaked. Larry thought about wringing out my socks since that was the last bottle of Absolute, but since I had been wearing them all day, he decided not to! LOL

Well they should be calling us up soon since we run right after Super Street. There should be some quicker times this morning!

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

There is a lot of frustration about track prep all across the country.
I am interviewing track managers for an editorial in our magazine.
The general agreement by these guys is "they use whatever product" they have consistent results with and the choice has to be made early.

$1000.00 a drum!! is the going price for traction compound. Add that into event costs and you can see why track owners are trying "new methods" of track prep.
A normal LODRS prep probably eats up two drums of spray-on traction compound, five gallon pail of rosin, three or four sets of tires on the track-drag, $200 in fuel for track prep equipment, 30 to 40 hours of labor before the event and two extra guys on the start line during the event to put rosin down. Then do it again Friday night and then Saturday night again.....

We are lucky at our local track, the manager does a fantastic job" prepping and maintaining the start line. He uses about 1/2 a drum for a two-day bracket race but it is the "pre-race prep that provides the results.

It is a lot more than just spraying more. It is proper scraping, washing the oil residue off, dragging with the "proper tires" for that track and then finding the "combination" of all those factors to make it good enough for 600 H.P. 9" tire cars...see the issue?

It isn't that this track or that track don't care.... since us racers don't want to change our cars at all we just demand a perfect starting line. What if there was no track prep anymore and we had to figure out how to race without the wheels in the air every run?

More fun? Different winners? Maybe no more $125,000 Stock Elim. cars?

Who knows..but when traction compound hits $1500 a drum; I bet we find out.

1.30 60' on 9" tires (I have to admit) is fun... but the cost is HIGH!

Good luck this weekend.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

Just made our first run and all cars seemed to hook a lot better today. Hopefully the track prep will stay good for everyone the rest of the weekend. The air went from 2800' yesterday with a 10 mph headwind to 1048' this morning and no wind. So people picked up a lot over yesterday. DRC should have results up soon.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

chevy620 then if it cost so much maybe they should just go to 1/8 mile racing only.that should cut the price by half, then they can cut the entry by half. That works for me

If anything,I think it might lead to more $125,000 Stock Eliminator cars that incorporate some sort of traction control system.

Well we got Mike Bryant down the track , he is 1.025 under at 138mph lots more left in the car. He was heavy for the class, only if he would listen to Rich & me he can even go alot faster . Only his 4th pass in the car. Boy is he happy . He will be a car to recon with.

Rich broke a valve in the Yellow Bananna so we are done for the weekend.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

Well it has been a bad day here for me. As Chris posted, someone stole my phone this morning. Of course, it was my fault because I went off and left in the stands when we ran first qualifying run. I am pretty sure I know who took it because there were not but 3 other people anywhere around--2 girls and a boy about 16-18 years old. I went back and questioned them after I realized it was gone and they said they had just been in the stands for 5 minutes which was a lie. But I can't prove it. It is turned off and reported stolen but I guess they can still sell it on ebay or something. Anyway it just makes you mad that people think they deserve your stuff more than you do!

That stinks Patsy. My wife lost hers , like that last yr in a store. Someone was using it, and she called it from my sons phone, and they told her, too bad, try to find them !! She shut it down then. Lost all kinds of stuff in it.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

I want great track prep as well. Just saying it is a lot more involved that throwing down some rosin and spraying the track.
Predicting upcoming temperatures can make a difference what you "cut the glue" with (methanol or MEK). Different brands of traction compound offer TOTALLY different results on different tracks due to track texture or how much sun it gets. etc.

We struggle with our 700 HP nose heavy three-speed 3400-lb Cutlass in hot months but it can go 1.29 / 60s all day on good track but easily loses .03-.07 on greasy starting lines.

We just started using the MSD GRID and I think we found the cure. Using the launch retard we hooked every run on a very "green" track last weekend and only varied .009 in 60' over 6 runs. Slowed the car a bit but it was deadly consistent.

Well I am sick and tired of Atlanta! We ran .009 over our index and Mr. Reid went .007 over his index! And he had a better light, so we are packing up to go home.

I will have more to say later, but right now I would like to know if anyone knows how Mickey Whaley is. He had a medical emergency right before we ran first round and they took him to the hospital. Please let us know if you hear how he is. How about you, Karen? Have you heard from him?

We had a pretty good weekend, but my crew and i are not to pleased with the operation of the tree.... all weekend its been a slow tree and then in eliminations theres a quick tree....my dad recorded every run and its obvious that the consistency of the tree was not CONSISTENT!

What a difference a day makes and help from two SRAC members. Thanks Jeff and Mike for your time in helping get the track to understand what the problem was.

The starting line crew did a very good job on keeping the track in good shape today.

I lost first round today. My competition had a better lite and ran .009 over his dial. I lost fair and square today, yesterday the track beat me. Today was still a lot of fun and we look forward to our next race here.

With auto start, the tree is supposed to vary from run to run. Hate that it went from a slow tree to a quick one for you, but I don't think anyone has control over that. The computer does. It was opposite for me yesterday. Every hit all weekend has been somewhat consistent in super gas, but my last hit yesterday was a very long tree and I ended up flinching because my brain said its time ( lol ) and went .059 red. Good thing it was a time run.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

Well we have left the track and are not stopped at Exit 137 on I-85 at the QT for $3.55 diesel. That is the best price we have seen on this trip. Thank you to Mitch Kight and Johnny Fisher for helping us get out of our pit spot this morning. It is always bad to be the first one to lose and try to maneuver out of your spot.

This wasn't a very good weekend for us. First off the car was slow. Then the track didn't hook until yesterday. And then the first day we got here and I opened up the medicine cabinet, I found out about that saying "contents may shift in flight". Larry's after-shave fell out and broke into a thousand pieces! One positive thing about that--our bathroom has smelled great all weekend. Then I broke the bottle of Absolute. Then Larry lost 1st round of Race 1. Then someone stole my phone. Then Larry lost 1st round of Race 2. The only good thing about the weekend was spending time with good friends! We had a great time with the Hidalgos and Marshalls! Jimmy cooked some great food once more--crawfish one night and deer from KY stew last night!

So anyway we are on our way home. Going to get the pool ready for Grandma and the granddaughters this week~

We plan on being at Bristol in a couple of weeks. See ya then!
Oh, if anybody hears from Mickey, please post.

Re: "Live" from Atlanta double points race 2013

I can see how quick the tree starts might effect a racer using the pro tree, but it shouldn't have any effect on a full tree ... unless you are leaving off the top bulb.

I'm pretty sure this is how autostart works:

Stage minimum: 0.6 secs (The time both cars are staged before autostart begins.)
Staged to Start: 1.1 secs (The time before the tree starts.)
Variance: .2 seconds

So from the time both cars are staged until the tree starts varies from 1.7 secs to 1.9 secs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Of course the starter can override autostart also.

If there is only supposed to be .2 variance, I think it would be pretty hard to tell a quick tree from a long tree.
