Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Talked with Angelo DeCarlo in Vegas yesterday. The 63 StingRay is the old Ault & James Modified car according to Angelo. I can tell you it is IMMACULATE ! Very straight and a beautiful bright RED ! He is on the qualified list at #20 @ 9.928 ET going into day two of qualifying tomorrow (Friday)

Attachment 22035 Attachment 22036Enclosed are picture of my 62 G/G Corvette that I raced in the 1970's. It had 288 cu in sbc Nash 5 sp Mr Gasket Vertical gate shifter. Dana with 6:50 and Sommers Bros spool and axles. I had a Motorola 12,000 rpm Tell Tale tach. The Tell Tale needle would be pinned past 12,000 rpm after each run. My best run was 10:12 @ 134.00 mph. I still have my spare 40# Hays flywheel and 12 bolt long style pressure plate. I sold the car turn key in 1978. |

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Two really sweet hot rods right there. Two racers not to far from showroom stock, I know if they were mine....they would have tags on them as well....Cars like those two deserve more fun than just a quarter mile at a time.....but definitely some quarter mile time for those babies.
Again, love those two! Wade Mahaffey |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Look who was "Best Engineered Car" award winner at the Las Vegas Divisional points race last weekend. Angelo DeCarlo from out Chicago way, with his 63 SS/HA Corvette entry....Sweet car!

Lynn those are two super looking cars!!!!!

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
DeCarlo's 63 is drop dead AWESOME!!!! He one lucky guy.
|
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
I don't want to "discredit" those guys from the nice car they have.....but an SS/HA is a loooong way from Modified eliminator .......without the manual trans , 10,000 plus RPMs.........its just not the same.

I have Jerry Arnold's old 60 Corvette that I am slowly restoring, Jerry was kind enough to dig up some old photos from the early 70's, he also included his final round wins & runner ups that he could remember, I thought the stats were impressive. The car is finally out of body shop prison so more to come on what it looks like now, thanks.......Doug Engels

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes

I took a few pics of the 60 to show you what it looks like now, it's painted 61 corvette fawn beige with a creme cove, I hope to have it together by spring but we'll see. The 66 is an ex modified car that we have been working on for a couple years now & it's close, you should see it in super stock come spring....

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Don't ever change the wheels on the '60. Those polished Cragar Super Tricks are perfect in my book,,, ran a set on my black '66 Nova in the '70s. People loved them,, me too.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Hey all,
I had the time so I worked over some classic 1990 US Nationals video here. This is the true gearhead era... note the extra pit space! This was probably the last really great Indy for modified. Its mostly stick SS and Modified from the top gear bashers of the day. Lee Otis, Taylor, Calder, FJ Smith, Don Wolf, Larry Pritchett, Scotter Anderson, Willie McLemore, Stokes, Yamarino, Barforth, Bridges, Ronnie Smith, and more. Cary Menard is announcing most of Round 1, and he's just great on the ears. Note that there was no S/C on the grounds in 1990. https://youtu.be/ey_0On77zZ4 |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
So there are two parts to this video, It was apparently broken in two after 14 minutes.
Here is the end of round 1 class and the rest is round 2, and some extras. Cary Menard is announcing most of Round 1, and he's just great on the ears. The audio is pretty awesome here, good enough to get Kubrick awards someday! I hope you diehards enjoy this. https://youtu.be/yhEv0-BND_4 |

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Been following this thread for awhile and was thinking about the old IHRA days of Modified, with names like Mark Osborne and bro. Ted Osborne and ofcourse Gene Fulton and Strawberry Dixion and Kenny Melton, and Dane Pearson and the Papa Smurf corvette out of Kent. can't get his name in my head, these guys could rake a good old Doug Nash and keepem whinnding all day, the heavy flywheels are the best, oh almost forgot my friend Steve McCrearys beautiful Dog Gone Vette, man those where the days.............................................. .........:)....................................... ...............................

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Doug,
The '60 is stunning, just like all of your cars. You have outdone yourself again! What class and combo are you going to run in the mid-year SS car? Do you have any pics of the SS/Mod '57 you had a year ago that you can post? That was a masterpiece as well. |

I agree. I remember as a 6-8 year old pouring bleach under my Dads slicks at Epping and Conn. Dragway. Whenever he ran a 'Vette, I assumed we would lose. Those cars scared me! I remember we went to a race in Maryland or Virginia and there was a 'Vette there that my Dad was in awe of. Think it was lettered Martinez and Barth or something like that. Anyone remember? I also remember getting beat regularly by Larry Kopp and "Sundays Child", driven by some guy named Al Hoffmann! M/P ruled! Manny Sousa |

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
All
I added another video of the McLemore dry hop from 1992. Why is it that a new, ground hugging, 8.10 comp car is less fun to watch than this car? I can't believe he got 3 dry hops in, and thought about a fourth one! This may have been the coolest thing at the entire event. Glad I caught it. https://youtu.be/pIw3zlnFEhA |
